Rondec

Is this safe to give to infants?
Took Travis to the doctor on Monday. Saw a young pediatrician (couldn't get in to see our pediatrician, so we saw another one in the practice). She said there was nothing she could give him.
He got better, then it came back and he got a terrible cough, too.
Called the pediatrician's office today, nurse called back, asked me some questions, and told me to take him to the ER to get chest xray and to check for RSV.
After spending four hours there, I am happy to report he has only a cold.
ER doctor prescribed RONDEC, 1/4 cc however often (can't remember how often right now).
Googled it because pediatrician said there was nothing she could give him, and then ER doctor gives him a prescription for RONDEC infant drops.
One site showed the dosage exactly as ER prescribed. Another site says it could cause convulsions in newborns. Is Travis still a newborn at 6 weeks? Are there extenuating circumstances where it would cause convulsions--like if other conditions are present or could it happen with any newborn randomly?
HELP!

I've never used it, but it's simply a decongestant from the looks of the stuff I found. Should be OK. If you are uncomfortable with it, call your Ped tomorrow before using it. I have found in my experience that the Ped's really only prescribe the things that they know and have had good effects in their patients. Different Peds rely on different brands. Simply looks like a decongestant. Most things are calculated on a wt. basis per the Ped, so it should be a safe dosage. If you are still not comfortable, hold off and talk to your Ped tomorrow.

WHen it comes to listing the possible side effects of medications, while in the study they look at ANY and all things that may have happened to someone while on the meds, whether related or not (maybe a couple of babies had a convulsions because of fever, but because they were on the med, it has to be listed as a possible side effect)....or say someone is on antibiotics for an infection, and end up with the flu and have diarrhea, it has to be listed as a POSSIBLE side effect.

That all being said, we have a few infant drops up here in Canada that you can now buy, and they are just on the shelf. I know that the meds we have available up here are sometimes different than what you all have....some up here you have to have a prescription for while down there you dont' , and vice versa.....and heck you all have some meds down there that you can't get up here

Both Desiree and Moses have used Rondec, usually helps them to not cough as much and makes them sleepy. I only would give at bed time and before naps.

Thanks, Kim!
Michele, you are so right about the side effects. I never thought of it that way, but you are right. Thanks for that clarification.
Desiree, I am glad to know that I am not the only mom who has given this to her kids.
We ended up taking him to see the pediatrician a couple of days after I started this thread, and he said that Rondec was fine, but he gave us something that worked a little better.

YOu are welcome. NOt everyone knows about how they list the side effects of meds.....heck there are some meds where you wonder why on earth something would even be considered a side effect....and have you ever noticed that MOST meds have the side effects of diarrhea or nausea or vomiting....
