Are these things normal?

Hi all. I'm in need of some help. Randy is doing well, but the past few days have been a little harder than normal. He is giving me such a hard time taking the bottle, he'll breast feed like there is no tomorrow, but when I try the bottle, he turns his head and cries and actually chokes a little, and he's not taking near as much formula as he used too. He used to take up to 7-9 oz. plus both breasts, now I'm lucky if he takes 5 oz. His stools are also very very smelly, and I thought this was normal, but I've heard that it isn't normal. Is it? Please help, other than not taking a bottle as easily and his stools he seems alright. But after he b/f...he's crying because he is still so hungry, and I feel bad, but once my breasts are empty, there isn't much I can do but offer the bottle. Any tips or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

it sounds to me like he is preffering the breastmilk to formula, maybe you can get pumping and try that in a bottle? it will also increase your supply. I hope someone has some really good information for you!

Have you started any rice cereal, fruits or veggies? You can offer him that w/breastmilk instead of the formula.

He's still very young, right? How old?

If he's nursing well try eliminating the bottle. He may not be hungry at all. Smelly stools are from the formula and that's normal. Even if your breasts feel "empty" they aren't. They are never truly empty. The extra nursing may help build your supply.

I agree with Abby. Try eliminating the bottle, if that doesn't work, pump and add rice cereal to the bottle. It will fill him up. Also, stinky comes with formula. Ick. It is normal.

My dd would never touch the bottle. It sounds like he just prefers the breast. I understand that breastmilk tastes different at every feeding and formula always tastes the same. Maybe he just likes the variety.

I'm thinking you ladies are correct. He just seems to prefer my breast over the bottle. He's a little over 3 months old now and the pediatrician wants me to start him on cereal at about 4 months. His next appt isn't until January 4, and he'll be over 4 months, should I wait for the dr. appt to start him on cereal, or go ahead and start once he reaches 4 months old? I have tried added a bit of rice cereal to my breastmilk in a bottle, but it made his stools really firm, so I have stopped trying that. At night, he only takes breast and no bottle, but his diaper isn't always very wet (not as wet as when he gets formula too) I'm also not very good with pumping, I'm lucky to get a half ounce to an ounce. He's growing though, and my closest estimate of weight is around 15 pounds now!!! (he's almost completely out of 3-6 and heading into 6-9. Diapers that fit up to 16 lbs. are getting tight, so I switched to diapers that go up to 18 lbs. He's in a much better mood today also, very pleasant and smiling a lot. Much better than the past like 4 days have been. Thanks a lot for your responses ladies, you have helped reassure me. Since this is my first, (and after the little scare and problems he had after birth) things like this just scare me because I'm scared something may be wrong.

Thanks much
Angie
