Gift card scam alert it is true

Well the crooks have found a way to rob you of your gift card balance. If you buy Gift Cards from a display rack that has various store cards you may become a victim of theft. Crooks are now jotting down the card numbers in the store and then wait a few days and call to see how much of a balance THEY have on the card. Once they find the card is "activated", and then they go online and start shopping. You may want to purchase your card from a customer service person, where they do not have the Gift Cards viewable to the public.

i guess nothing is sacred eh?

we have tons of gift cards all over our store. i'm not sure if any of them are available online though, and the only way to get a balance is to show us the card. not the number

Thanks Annie! I haven't purchased any gift cards this year. My SIL tries to talk me into getting them for her kids every year then makes them use the cards to buy school supplies and necessary clothes. So I refuse to do it. She can buy her own kids' clothes and school supplies. I want to give them a real gift. I have thought about getting those restraunt gift cards though.

Oh wow ... and it's so convenient! Walmart has tons of different gift cards this year and I was thinking about doing that for the teachers and such. Guess that's not such a good idea after all!

Thanks for the heads up!

Don't you have to have the pin from the back (that needs to be scratched off) to use the card online? Maybe I'm wrong...
I'm still going to go into our grocery store and pick up an Old Navy card for Haley. I'll just pick from the back of the pile.

I was thinking about picking one from the back, but then figured that would probably be the one *they'd* pick. So hard thinking like a crook. I think I'll just go ahead and go with my initial plan and if they want it that bad ... oh well!

I agree Gift Cards are so handy. I am thinking the middle of the pile. Elaine made a great point, a lot of them do have pin numbers so I am wondering how they got that. I know Alisha Itunes cards you have to scatch it off. Is there a way to look through the silvery stuff to see the numbers?
