Books for older girls - please help me

Ok, I just adopted a family for christmas. The girls are 10 and 13, and they would like books and board games. I have no idea what kind of books, so anyone with a girl in that age, what do they like to read???

When I was that age, I liked books about horses, Robert Dahl, Little House on the Prarie and that sort of thing. However, I doubt girls like the same things I did anymore. I would try the young adult section at the bookstore and see what chapter books they have. My nieces who are that age refuse to read outside classwork.

As for games, my niece likes Monopoly. I am guessing they would like PayDay, Life, Chess maybe, Othello... I think you can get a box of a number of traditional games (checkers, chinese checkers, etc) in one box for not too much at Walmart. Also, Big Lots has a box of like 20 games for $15. It's a minature pool table with those sorts of games. I have looked at it many times, but my dd is just too young for that sort of thing. Also, we already have a minature pool table with air hockey and that sort of thing.

I think Toys R Us usually puts their board games on sale for like 1/2 price this time of year. Last year, I bought my dd a ton of games for like under $30 that way. I haven't checked out the games online this year because I got all I wanted last year.

The Doll in the Garden by Mary Downing Hahn
Trixie Belden books
Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm by Kate Douglas Wiggin
Wayside School Books
Wait till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn
Little House on the Prairie Series
Ghosts beneath our Feet (can't remember the author)
The Secret Garden
Anne of Green Gables

As for games there is a brand new Monopoly game out that is updated to fit the times that they most likely wouldn't have yet.

Jessica loves the Lemony Snicket books ...

The new monopoly game is still a bit tough (Jessi's 10 and I had to help her with a lot of the math because all those zeros get confusing). There's also a Spongebob Monopoly that the kids LOVE and a Spongebob Life game (on our Christmas list). Another FUN game, if you can find it, is Pass The Pigs.
