pushing time

How long did you push for? Is there a "normal" (average) amount of time for a first time mom? I just don't want to expect it to go really fast and find out that it's normal to take a LONG time and be frustrated.
I think it's entirely dependant on the person. I don't think there is a normal amount of time. It's gonna depend on where Gabe is and how big he is I think

I think average for first time mom is 1-2 hours but still depends on everything size, mother pushing baby moving down.

How come you're always the difficult one?

I'm just curious because I don't want to think 30 min or an hour is all it's going to be when alot of people are 2 or more hours, especially for a first. When you watch all those birthing videos they edit it (obviously) so it's not like you watch the lady bear down for an hour or two.

Bailey-45min 10pnds 5ounces
Emily-5min 5pnds 3ounces

Krista! no wonder you had four!

i didn't push at all, he never made it that far.

With Brianna I pushed for 2 and half hours-7 lbs 3oz.

Twins-c-section no pushing

Depends on the Mom's structure, the baby's structure/size and progression of labor.

Lauren was about 3 pushes. Ryan was 3-4 pushes.
Jimmy was 50 min and Jaedyn 15 min
I think as a general rule they won't let you push longer than 3 hours.
Mine all went fairly quickly. The fastest being about 5 mins and the longest an hour. The hardest and longest one was my second because I had a strong epidural and couldn't feel what I was doing at all.
I have a friend who went close to 3 hours though.
Also, how long you push depends on how the baby reacts to everything. If the baby's fine with the pushing, they let you push.

I know with Lauren they were worried about decelerations. They gave me one hour to get the contractions going or I was getting a section. Thank goodness..... one hour and 12 min later we had Lauren.

I kinda feel like my labor/delivery class was a waste, we didn't really talk about this at all. You'd think that they would have given you *some* idea what to expect.
The more I know the better I feel, and I keep Mike posted as to what I learn so he's not nervous either.

With Duncan I pushed about an hour, with Logan about 30 minutes with Ian I believe I pushed a total of three times and with Kyan I pushed twice.

Watch out Shona, with this little boy you take a big breath to get ready to push, and when you lift your head to bear down you see your little angle lying on your belly

Jerome took less than 10 min,
Cedric less than one, I pushed once, I think, and he slipped right out.
God help us if we do have another one

3 & 1/2 hours pushing with Austin (he was stuck, I should have had an emergancy c-section)

With Dylan I push about 3 times..
Hey Shona and Eva....sounds like they need to admit you all PRIOR to delivery with the next ones!

My sister was the same.... 3 hrs. (entire process) for first son, 1 1/2 hrs. (entire process) for second son. They joked about preadmitting her a week early if there was to be a 3rd!

No worries here.... I had to be induced both times.

I didn't push. I never dilated enough with Emily, and I ended up having an emergency c-section.
My friend Laura's aunt is a midwife, and she told her when she was pregnant with her first one to push as hard as she could every single time, no matter how tired she was. She told her to really focus on pushing and to imagine getting to see her baby with every push so that she would have an incentive to push really hard.
Laura did this and only pushed for 30 minutes with the first one. With the second, she pushed even less. She had to have a c-section with the third baby.
Mel, I hope it goes quickly for you and that you are like Eva and Shona and you just have to push two times to see your little guy!

Me too, but I think they might be freaks

You know what, Mel. With Jerome, I had a mirror. I saw his little head come out, and when I rested it went right back in. That was motivation enough for me to keep pushing like crazy, because he was so close, I was able to touch him, and I just really wanted him. With Cedric obviously there was no time for a mirror...

I don't want a mirror. The thought kinda freaks me out
post #22 of 34
With Kimmy it was about 25 min of pushing. Not bad.

Alyssa was 4 pushes and she was out!
Oh, the mirror!! With my 1st one they asked if I wanted to watch. UMMMM NO THANKS!! If I see that big ole thing coming out of me, I would pass out!!!

With the 2nd, they had a TV directly in front of my bed and I could see myself reflected in it. I made dh hang a sheet on it so I coulnd't see!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't want the mirror
post #25 of 34
I didn't do a mirror either! Too creepy. I know she's in there and she's gotta come out - I just don't wanna watch - I may not want another!

Karen!!
With David I think it was 45 minutes. With Anna I think about 15 minutes. With William and Elizabeth I pushed basically one big time and they came flying out.
I am not a freak ok, well.. maybe a little
Keep in mind that my pushing may have been short, but my labors were all really long.
I LOVED having those mirrors. And it really helped especially with my first. I was exhausted ( 20 + hours of labor will do that to ya) and I wasn't pushing effectively for a while, but once I saw his head in that mirror.. that was all it took.
Though.. the doc told me to reach down and touch his head ( while it was still in there) and dummy here did LOL. All I said was.."ick" and pulled my hand away LOL.

My pushing went really quick.....Josh I was fully dialated and pushed about 4 times total. With Jake and Jesse my DR went in and manuvered the rim of cervix that was left over their heads...so because we had to go a little slower it was little longer, but all in all about 30 minutes.

My advice with pushing.....take a deep breath and push like you are trying to poop a big ol' watermelon(exactly what it feels like). Just think of it as being constipated for 10 months and now it's time to pay the piper. It's the exact muscles you use for pooping so just do it the same way just harder.....and it will hurt(unless an epidural takes that away...don't know never had one) but push right through the pain. I have to say with my first, after 2 days of labor, pushing felt like heaven despite the pain, with my second my labor was easy so pushing hurt like hades(didn't help that I had an arm up my wazoo), and with the third it was just a blur, one minute I was laboring the next she was examining me and told me to push...I had(after three days of on again off again labor) just got a dose of demeral/fentinal and I was really spaced out , I just did what I was told.

Hey Bridget, I agree. I didn't have any meds, either, and pushing felt like finally I was able to do something, since there isn't really anything you can do with the contractions...
