induction questions?

Ok So after I left the doctor yesterday I realized I didn't ask all the questions I wanted too. I was too excited and nervous.

For anyone that's had the cervidal (sp?) I know that I'll be at the hospital all night. Do they hook me up to the monitor the whole time? Or just periodically? I assume that they want me to sleep as well as possible that night but I don't really know how well I'll sleep between being excited and hooked up to a fetal monitor.

Are there other questions I should make sure I ask the nurses when I get there to double check for procedure? or if I can wander around much?

My doctor won't be there on Friday, she said she'd be in on Sat morning. So it will just be me and some nurses. I'm just curious if there are questions I missed, since now I'm worried I won't have asked all that I need. I know Mike will have his own list for her on Sat morning, he's much better at asking weird questions other people forget then me.

I've never had that. But I wanted you to make sure you knew that if you and your L&D nurse do not clikc, you have every right to ask the nurse manager for another. Just be diplomatic abou tit, "We just don't click" She'll be with you a good part of your time there and she won't get into trouble or get mad at you. You need someone you are comfortable with and comfortable talking too. I've had three GREAT wonderful nurses and I've had two I've had to ask to be reassigned to another patient. ( I guess 3 out of 5 is really good though) Not one got in trouble and not one got mad at me. This is a once in a life time experience. They want it as good for you as you do. I was thinking about that when I read an artilce the other day about the same thing. You are going to be fine. And you are going to have a WONDERFUL experience. You are in my prayers.

from what I remember it requires immediate monitoring of the baby for a period of time... 1 or 2 hours if I'm remembering correctly and then every few hours you will need to be hooked back up for shorter periods.
You do need to get as much rest that night as possible but I can honestly say that I just don't think it is a real possibility. Napping during labor (after receiving an epidural) was easier for me than sleeping while nothing was going on.

Haven't had that med. I'm with Elaine, if at all possible sleep. I couldn't when I was induced till they gave me an epidural though, too pumped up. Shona is right, if the nurse and you don't mesh get a new one. They don't want you unhappy either...

With my sister they gave her the gel watched her for an hr then sent her home. She actually returned the next morning to be induced. I guess every Dr is different.

I had cervidil and another one (forget the name). Neither did much for me. It made me contract about every 1-3 minutes but no dilation. I had both over night (different nights). Yes, they hooked me up to monitors the whole time. Pitocin in the morning. All day for 6 days this went on. Then I ended up with a c-section. I was induced 3 weeks early though. I'm sure yours will go fast since he's ready to be evicted!

For my inductions my OB's didn't use cervidil or anything like that. I got pitocin and my epidural and had Lauren in 10 hrs. and Ryan in 4 1/2. I tried to sleep during labor...just catnaps off and on. My OB wasn't there the whole time with either....the L&D RN's I had were GREAT! They could have delivered no problem (and have) without the OB's.

I was on the monitor the whole time with both of them. Didn't walk around.

If you don't click with the nurse, that's fine, you can always find the charge RN and be reassigned. No problem. I was fortunate and never had that problem.

Take care...good luck...and I will be thinking about you!! Can't wait for GABE pictures!!

I got the cervidil with Will and went from 1 cm to 6 in 1 1/2 hours it worked WONDERFULLY for me with no super painful contractions but he said that seldom happens. I was hooked up to a monitor until I had Will but I was high risk due to GBS and having to get antibiotics.

I had three attempted inductions with Jonathan. I was sicker than a dog, so they were trying to induce me a little early. But the little turkey would NOT move and I was not dilating at all. The last day, the cervidil did work well enough that they could break my water, but he didn’t tolerate the labor well, so they did a c-section anyway. But you are far enough along and have made progress already, so you should be fine.

I had cervidil all three times. It’s like a gel tab thing that is attached to this string. It pulls out kind of like a tampon or something. Anyhow. They put it in at night, and it’s supposed to help soften the cervix and dilate you some by the morning. They take it out the next morning before they start pitocin or anything. My best friend was induced twice with cervidil and no problems. Perfect, easy deliveries.

Make sure you eat dinner that night and get plenty to drink. They didn’t let me have much of anything the next day. They had ice chips and Popsicles and things like that. They had a policy about not letting you eat a lot of whoel foods in case they had to do an emergency C-section and didn’t want you choking on anything or throwing up during it.

I was put on a monitor when I got there that night, but they took it off when it was time for me to get some sleep. The next morning they woke me up and I walked for a while until the doctor got there. They hooked it back up bright and early the next morning and I had it on all day.

I am with Shona… If you don’t like your nurse, ask for another one. My nurse was technically good. She knew what she was doing, but her bedside manner was horrible. I dealt with about every nurse up there by the time I left, and the rest were just wonderful! But the day I actually had him, I really didn't care for the one that was there.

My doctor was there pretty much all day the day I was actually in labor. he came in and did the cervidil himself and then the nurse took it out the next morning. They waited until he got there to start the pitocin, etc.

If you want to know why they're doing something, ASK. If they're not doing something you think they should be doing, ASK.

If you have any problems with your meds (like the pain meds aren't strong enough, or don't take) be sure to tell them. I waited for my epidural to "kick in" and it never did. Finally they figured out that it just didn't take, so they gave me a spinal. That was great. LOL!

You will do great. And it will all be worth it when you hve Gabe with you!

I had petosin (sp?) and it didn't do anything for me. (Had a C-section after 18 hours of labor) They had a monitor on me the whole time and I couldn't get up and move around, since I was trying VBAC (Vaginal Birth after Ceserian) and they were worried about my Uterus rupturing.

i had the gel administered at 8am the first morning, they were going to do that every 8 hours but i asked not to have him until the next day *not my birthday* the gel worked a bit. the OB came and broke my water the next morning, contractions kinda started but not much, i did a few hours waiting to see how i would progress, then they put me on the pitocin, he started distressing around 5-6pm and i ended up with a c-section at 7:56

oh i had epidurals throughout as well. wonderful stuff.

I was an early induction because of my health so i think personally that neither me nor logan were quite ready to have him out yet

I felt so silly after I left, I asked all kinds of questions about the pitocin and that part but not about the gel or the night before. I guess it's because I had heard of pitocin and kinda knew about it and that it's more invasive. I made a call yesterday afternoon and asked more questions so I feel better now.

I've got a book and the cribbage board packed so Mike and I have something to do during the evening. I can walk around a bit, but not for a couple hours at first and then again later they'll make me stay in bed.
Thanks for all the help ladies, I always know you've got good answers.
