Crying at night

Thread Starter
My son is 9 months old and for the last several weeks he has been waking up in the middle of the night and just screeching. There is no way to calm him down at all. This is making Mom and I a little trying. He finally goes back to sleep just crying himself back.

Any idea on what might be going on here???

Thanks.

My son slept through the night from birth to 9 months. At nine months my son started doing the same thing. At his year appointment it turned out that he had double ear infection. I am not saying this is what is wrong with your son but my circumstance. He is now almost 5 and he still gets up maybe 1 -2 times a week.

I wish I had a straight answer for you.

I tried music in his room, night lights and so many more.

Good luck.

Is he awake when you try to calm him down? Could he be going through the terrible night terrors already??

My son is almost 3. He still gets up in the middle of the night, almost every night and crawls into bed with my dh and I.....Its a bad habit that we started, but it got to the point that if we didn't do that, I got no sleep as my son would scream and screech. I think he was justscared of being alone.....but of course will not sleep with a stuffed animal or anything

I would get his ears checked first thing. And there may be something in his room that is waking him, or bothering him at night. Such as a sound, like wind or something of the sort. We didn't start putting ours to bed on their own until around 9 months so.. I can't help much, we rocked and sang and bottle or breastfed until they fell asleep. Does he wake up wet? Maybe he just wants to be changed?
Or hungry? Maybe a sippy cup or bottle?

I would definitely say an ear infection. Go get the poor lil buggar's ears checked

My first thought was teething, could that be an issue? Check to see if his gums are red and swollen, if so a little tylanol can go a long way towards helping. He should also be due for his 9 month check up so don't forget to talk about it with his DR. Have his ears and gums checked. It could be any number of things so be sure to check all the basics(temp, hunger, diaper, pain, etc) each time. If it seems to be none of the usual causes just try laying him down and patting/rubbing his back or tummy, he could just need to have a little comfort.

All of my children slept better with some sort of white noise whether it was a TV turned on in the background or a fan running.
I hope nothing is wrong with him and it is just a phase he is going through but I agree with the other ladies and would have his ears checked just in case.

My guess is an ear infection or night terrors. My daughter had night terrors starting at a young age, but I don't think it was before a year old.

My son does this. He is 9 months old also. He could be going through a growing spurt, have you tried giving him a bottle? We are in a terrible habit with Ryan (he is 9 months also) that I give him a bottle and he goes right back to sleep.

I would talk to the doctor.

I was just going to say the same things as the other ladies. Ears or teeth.

My son started teething around that time. He didn’t actually get a tooth until he was close to a year old, but he did have a lot of mouth pain from about 7 months til one year.

Sounds like night terrors. Have him checked out by the doctor ASAP to rule anything out like ear infections and while there discuss this as possible night terrors. They are scarey because they sleep through them.
