Milk before 12 months

Has anyone given their babies milk before they turned 1 year old? I am debating on whether I should switch. First off, the doctor had told me months ago that they used to milk right off the bat. I believe it is a vitamins/iron thing that the formula is used for right now. He is 9 1/2 months old and drinks very little of his formula. In fact, I throw more away then he drinks and it kills me when I am spending $50 a week on formula. Do you think it would hurt him to start on milk early?

Both my kids were given permission at 7 months to switch. It was gradual... 1/4 switch every few days. and he suggested 2% for mine but I have heard them suggesting whole if you have the skinny kids.

Ok so I guess Ryan should get 2% since he weighs 1 1/2 lb less than his 3 year old brother! LOL

I think I am going to go for it. I have a full can right now of formula so I can gradually introduce the milk. Thanks!

Zach switched to whole milk at 10 months when I stopped bfing. He didn't seem to have any problems with it.

Jimmy started half formula and half milk bottles at 10 months....unless he has an allergic reaction which I doubt he will be fine. Formula contains cows milk anyway it says that right on the can.

Joey got no dairy at all (except what I'm sure my in-laws gave him, since they told me skim milk wasn't dairy ) until he was 18 months old. We did soy formula, and just avoided dairy. But that was because we'd read that diabetes can be triggered by dairy in children who have a family history of type 1 diabetes (BIL is type 1).

I'd say go for it. I think they recommend whole milk because of vitamin content, and fat is good for children - helps with brain development, as I understand it. He's eating solids, too, right? Then I wouldn't worry about the fat in his milk. He'll be getting a lot of his nutrition from his solids soon enough. Of course, if you're buying 2% for everyone, then I'd go with that.

If your doctor's OK with it, and he's not drinking much formula anyway, I'd start introducing it slowly. Just to make sure he doesn't have any allergies or anything.

If he's eating OK otherwise and has a good weight, then I agree--It's not worth it to waste all your money on formula he's not going to drink.

I would suggest whole milk .. SO MUCH better for him than 2%. Kale was a chunky monkey and they had him on whole milk .. and he is far from fat.

Talk with your pediatrician and get his/her reccomendation. I'm sure they would consider it. Lauren threw up Whole Milk, but 2% worked for her...... I started that right around 11 mo. to 1 year. She's on skim now and tolerating it well. Ry's next.... Oh Lordie.....

Ok. I will call the doctor and discuss it with them. I know they have iron drops if necessary. Thanks ladies!
