Help! I want to get started potty training!

Okee Dokeee..... Ms. Lauren is 26 months old and should probably start potty training. We've had a few successes, but she could really care less if she uses the potty or goes in her pants. Soooooo..... I ask you my friends for some ideas to use with her to get this show on the road. I don't want to still be having to change her diapers when she's graduating high school, if you KWIM....

In my opinion the first step is just to introduce the potty into the house. Put a training potty in the bathroom and show it to Lauren. Make a big deal about how cool it is but don't make a big deal about whether or not she wants to try it out or use it right now.
Maybe ocasionally let her know that you are going to go potty and ask her if she wants to try using hers but don't push.

I agree with Elaine. You can't push it.
To many parents start before the child is ready and a year later, the child is still in diapers.

Yup, I agree with Elaine too. Bring a potty in for her but don't make her go in it. You will know when she is ready.

Yep...I have her potty in the bathroom, she checks it out and has used it a few times. We made a huge deal over her successes, but she's like OK-Cool and that's about it. She sometimes will tell us when she's going, but usually doesn't, so we take her in there when she does tell us and praise her for going and for telling us.

I know each child does things in their own time, but I don't want to be slacking on things I should be working on her with, if you KWIM. She's my oldest, so go figure! Darn first-time potty training Mommies.

I started with the samethings you're doing however I made one rule: no peeing in the bathtub. I would re-enforce this by reminding him at bathtime to stand up if he has to pee. I would then pull the bowl from the potty when he stood and inform him to go in that. It started working and it wasn't about wearing underwear and it wasn't about trying to get to the bathroom to go potty. I think for most youngster the concept of oh I have to pee and oh I have to pee and I have to remember where to go to do that is to much. I started with bathtime and it was very successful.

Wish I could give some advice..
Dylan is almost 6 months older than Lauren and he has NO interest at all..
He used the potty a few times right before he would get in the shower a couple months ago... but now he just freaks out. He doesn' like the kiddie pottys at all either..

I figure.. he'll do it when he's ready.. and it's a lot less of a fight if I don't push the subject!

Alyssa was a breeze - I didn't have to do too much.

Dad is pushing Kate to potty train so all we are doing right now is letting her run aorund with underwear on all day. Depending on how well she does decised if she goes to bed with undies or a diaper.

We are doing ok so far.

she will let you know when she is more ready. logan had no interest for the longest time. then one day i told him that he couldn't wear his underwear to daycare because he kept having accidents and he didn't like that idea. he was pretty much daytrained from there on.

still working on nights, but not too hard

I understand the potty in the bathroom works well for most people.. .but for Tessa it worked better having it in the living room at first. She would use it for a chair while she watched TV (diaper and pants on at first). She loved that, once she got comfortable sitting on it, she would sometimes use it for a potty, and sometimes still a chair. When she was using it somewhat regularly we moved it into the bathroom, and switched to cloth training pants. I only used pullups with her for a week, but she never knew she was wet in them. So I switched to cloth ones.

Sammie was completely different, she wanted to go on the big potty like Tessa, so we got her a ring and a stool.

Karah has a potty chair in the living room. She usually just sits on it to play, sometimes she goes. She actually went poo in it yesterday. But it's still early days with her... she's not ready for anything more aggressive yet.
