Help! Need some advice about Tessa

So Tessa got her report card today. She gets one from her regular class, and one from the gifted teacher. They are almost competely opposite!!!!!!!

Her gifted teacher gave Tessa all consistenlty displayed (highest mark you can get DODD's grading is weird) which is an improvement from last term. She said that Tessa had improved her time management, was helpful and dependable in class. She says that Tessa knows her potential and consistently works to her full abilities.

Her regular teacher lowered 9 of Tessa's grades from Consistently Displayed to progressing. She states that Tessa doesn't read for pleasure (okay the books in the classroom are way below her level and she got in trouble for reading a Nancy Drew book so she doesn't read for free time anymore). She no longer practices self control regularly, she isn't responsible, she doesn't follow direction, manage her time well or work independently. She also has stopped turning in her homework (she does it every night, becuase i check it she just isn't turning it in). She says that Tessa isn't working up to her full potential and is easily distracted.

I brought up concerns at the last parent teacher conference that Tessa was bored in the classroom. Last year her teacher didn't care if Tessa finished work, since she knew that Tessa could do it. I brought that up and said that I was concerned it would be an issue this year, she thinks she doesn't need to show that she can do it because of her previous teacher. I don't agree with that policy and made that clear last year. I said that I was worried since she was so bored that she wasn't going to stay on track. Her teacher assured me that she wouldn't let that happen, and if Tessa started having problems she would let me know. WHY, why am I just now being notified that her homework isn't being turned in? Why if she isn't staying on track did the teacher not send me a note, or call, or email me and let me know? When I specifically told her that I was afraid this would happen, why once it did did she ignore it?

I know the reason why the teachers give different reports, Tessa is learning things in gifted so she stays focused because she is interested. They have yet to teach her anything she doesn't know in her regular class, so she is bored and I'm sure she is daydreaming. Jim and I both had that problem in school. I tried talking to her about it tonight... She has lost her radio and CD's and has no music which is her favorite thing. She just kept saying that she's bored in Ms Rileys class. She said she makes up stories in her head instead of doing her work because it's more interesting. I explained that there are alot of boring things in life... for instance I know how to do Laundry and other housework, and it's boring but I still have to do it. Anyone have any ideas on how to get thru to her??? I don't know how to make her pay attention in school, I'm not there.

I am going to schedule a conference with her teacher, and request weekly progress reports. I will create a sheet so all she has to do is make check marks, as to whether or not her homework/schoolwork is done. She is focusing etc...

I'm open for advice, please tell me someone else has gone thru this and can help

I wish I could give you some advice. I had similar issues when I was in school, but our gifted program was an all day one, so all subjects were taught at a different level. I'm kind of surprised that Tessa still has to be in a regular classroom for part of the day ???? What purpose does that serve?

It sounds to me like you need to pull in some other school officials on this one.

I wish I had some ideas for you....its hard when the teacher doesnt' seem to want to cooperate with you and help TEssa. We are lucky and Liz's teacher is really good with Liz. She has Liz helping out her classmates, and that way Liz doesn't get bored.....

What you are going through with TEssa now is what I am afraid I am going to go through with Liz. The worst part here is that there are no gifted programs until they are in grade 4.....so I have to pray that for the next 4 years she has good teachers.......

Dawn... they don't have all day gifted programs here. This one teacher teaches gifted for both elementary schools here. She only goes to gifted for 30 min twice a week.

I did find some good websites on gifted kids, and even discovered that there is a national association for gifted children.

Hon I don't know what to tell you. That's one reason I am so glad we skipped Duncan. At least he's being challenged in his class. Logan on the other hand.. everything just comes way to easy for him in school. I'm afraid that soon we will be going through this exact same thing with him.
I wish you could homeschool her, that might be the best way she learns.. but with Karah at home and your school and well.. just being a mom I don't know. I know I certainly couldn't do it.

Maybe you could set up some sort of reward system where she gets rewarded for paying attention and doing dull things in school. I'm not sure if the teacher will cooperate with telling you what is going on when she hasn't so far.

it just seems so strange to only have a 30 min. gifted program. You have to wonder what the whole purpose that would bring to the students.....does this actually benefit them?
