Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butters

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan peanut butter or Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with Salmonella Tennessee (a bacterium that causes foodborne illness). The affected jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter have a product code located on the lid of the jar that begins with the number "2111." Both the Peter Pan and Great Value brands are manufactured in a single facility in Georgia by ConAgra. Great Value peanut butter made by other manufacturers is not affected.

If consumers have any of this Peter Pan or Great Value brand peanut butter in their home that has been purchased since May 2006, they should discard it.

OK .. this sort of pisses me off. I have 3 unopened jars of this. We've already eaten 3 others (huge sale and I stocked up.) They are recommending that I just DISCARD it??? Ummm .. how about exchanging it or giving my money back????

Did you check numbers on the jar and are sure they are recalled? I'd be irritated that I stocked up too. If they are unopened maybe call the store and see if they will take them back?

Yeah ... they are all included in the recall. Jen happened to call me from Harris Teeter, so she asked the store manager for me. He said to bring them alll back ... open, unopened, empty. He'd refund me for any of them. Needless to say, I just dug the empty one out of the trash.

Let me find the address to send the lids to if the store will not take them
If consumers have this product, they should discard it, but save the product lid. For a full refund, consumers must return the Peter Pan Peanut Butter or Great Value Peanut Butter product lid along with their name and mailing address to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103.

Consumers with questions or concerns about the recall can call the 24-hour toll-free hotline at 866-344-6970. For more information about salmonella, visit www.ific.org.
