No Music, No Art, No Spanish??

BWA ( the kids school) had music classes last year. The gym teacher taught it. This year they said that they were putting in extra Gym classes ( two a week instead of one) Because gym was more important than music. George and I disagree. We think music is as important as gym, not more so, about equally so. They have no art classes and no spanish classes. Basically, all they teach them is the normal school stuff and then Gym and computers. I know they are on a more limited budget than a "normal" public school, but I wish there was something I could do. If they could find a volunteer(s) or something that would be great. I think the kids are missing out on some things but at the same time, it's the best school around and I refuse to put them back into a "normal" public school. The school system around here SUCKS. And in South Carolina in general. So, I was grateful and still am that they were received by BWA. I love having them in a charter school. A place I KNOW has a keyed entry only. No buses mean that there is face time with each and every students parent every single day. There are no more than 15 kids in a classroom. Their lunches ( should we choose to buy them) are monitored closely. Not like in most schools where they can choose really sweet or fattening desserts. The teachers and staff actually do email you back or call you back if you need to speak with them. I have most of their home phone numbers and I am welcome to call at any time for any reason. I cannot justify taking them out, simply because there is a lack of creative classes, but we can't afford music lessons right now, or art lessons. And as much as I hate it, they are going to need Spanish at least a little.
I don;'t know, it just bugged me when they told me gym was more important than music.

Oh and their principal actually picks up my boys and takes them to school. I have her home number and her cell number.

Ugh I agree that it stinks that they don't have those classes. Art and languages are always the first to get cut. I think the volunteer idea is great though.

Ok--I always hated gym and loved music. So, yeah, I'd be upset, personally.

I know that gym/phys ed is important for their physical well-being. But I also think kids should have a little bit of exposure to everything in order to be a well-rounded person and find out what their personal interests are. Art, foreign languages, music, etc. Even if it's just a couple of times a month, I think they need that.

I wonder if the problem is really that they don't have anybody qualified, or that they don't have anybody that wants to teach it? If the gym teacher was doing it last year and would rather teach gym, then it could be.

It could be. I know they don't have anyone qualified really and I know they can't afford to hire anyone. I wish they got the same funding as a regular public school. That would help a great deal. They are always doing fundraisers, but it just isn't enough.

Shona what about an art club after school? Tessa's school has art club and music club. Granted she isn't in the right age to be in them (whole nother topic there) but maybe they could have an after school club with a parent volunteer?

They are supposed to have after school clubs, but they never meet. And I wish there were more parent volunteers. If I had someone to watch the little ones and I had transportation, I would volunteer to do something.

that's too bad. I agree that music is very important. i bet it is a thing that the PE teacher just doesn't want to do it anymore, not that they feel PE is more important that music

That's what they told the kids, but in my opinion, the PE teacher is a jack*&&. I live next door to his mother, who is a precious woman, but he's not so nice.
