Problems with the hospital (rant)

Did anyone else have problems over the bill with the hospital? I swear these people are the world's biggest idiots. I have called them so many times to talk to them about problems with bills. I don't have a insurance card for the baby yet. They actually expected me to have one before she was born! Then asked me for an insurance card and social security number when she was only a week old! And got upset when I didn't have them! Of course, I didn't have an SSN and an insurance card for a 7 day old baby!

You'd think they deal with newborn babies everyday they'd know about the massive amounts of paperwork involved and the time it takes to process it! It can take up to 13 weeks to get a SSN. At least my insurance will not issue a card without an SSN.

Plus they billed the VA for the baby. Duh! The paperwork I gave them from the VA clearly stated that insurance would be paying for the baby and the VA would only pay for me. The paperwork for my care could take up to one year for processing. The letter I gave them said this. The VA called them a number of times and told them this.

In addition, I'm having some problem with my insurance. They keep making us fill out these forms over and over. I don't know what they are doing with them. Maybe someone is using them to line their canary cage.

I am just so annoyed that the child is only 2 months old and the hospital is already making threats about the bills. When they know - no SSN no insurance card. And it can take up to 13 weeks to get an SSN! I didn't even get her SSN until a couple of weeks ago! Besides, how could I have gotten her an SSN before she was born??? Which is what they seem to expect.

I told dh they must do this to everyone with private insurance. It seems to me that people who deal with newborn babies everyday ought to know that it takes time to get all the paperwork with the birth certificate, SSN and everything else you have to get done when you have a baby processed. We filled out everything immediately after she was born. In fact, dh did it on the day she was born. But you know, it just takes time for all this paperwork to clear the system. And you'd think as a hospital they'd know that! Argh!

But I keep getting these threatening letters about my bill and the baby's bill. I am sick to death of calling them and having the VA and my insurance call them. Why can't they get it through their miniscule brains that these bills will be paid, but not immediately! They don't even bother to read letters and cards I gave them in the first place which tell them this or they would know! Argh!

Okay I'm done ranting. I'm just sick to death of this hospital and these bill problems. Last year they billed an insurance company that was no longer covering my older dd even when I told them flat out we were no longer covered by that insurance and gave them copies of the new card.

Now their stupid billing problems are causing us problems with our new insurance too!

Of course you can't have a SSN before the baby is born The very best you could have done was go to the SS office and have it issued when you left the hospital, then you can get it right away, but most people don't do that because it's a hassle. You would think they would know all that

Sorry you're having such a hard time. You would think people would know how to do their own billing.

I'll get it straightened out. It's just a hassle. I'm just annoyed at having to fill out the same paperwork over and over, make the same calls over and over, because these morons can't get it through their thick heads that getting paperwork processed through the government takes time - no matter what level of government it is. Besides, she's only a little over 2 months old! It hasn't been that long!

That is crazy. Our insurance covers the baby for the first 30 days anyway so if the hospital bill in the 30 days it's paid under me and if it's after then it's paid under the baby. Doesn't really matter since it's the same policy. What a hassle.

I didn't realize you could go to SS and have them issue the card there. I had to go several times b/c Noah never got his card and they acted like it was my fault. Said I must have spelled his name wrong...couldn't possibly be that they had entered it wrong. I finally got his card but it was 7 months after he was born.

I didn't know that either, Abby. We just filled the girls out at the hospital and they mailed it in.

I'm not sure you can. When I got married and had to get a new card - I went right to the office. I could fill out the paperwork but still had to wait for the mail.

I am so sorry you are going through all that crap. Thank goodness that Peyton was covered under the state plan. I haven't seen a bill at all.

Our hospital told us we could do it that way. Mostly people do it so that they have a SSN for their kids for taxes if they are born at the end of the year. You have to wait for the physical card but you get their official number right away.

Oh, Mel, that makes sense. I filled Noah's out in the hospital and then waited and waited. I was worried it was "lost" somewhere so I went in to SS and they still had to mail it to me. I filled Zach's out in the hospital and had no problem. I got his a couple of weeks later.

I remember going to the SS office and turning in the paperwork myself when I got Sam's birth cert but I didnt have to with Logan.

As far as the ins aspect our system is set so it will bill the patient if we dont have the ins info. I am pretty sure all the systems are automated and it goes threw the billing cycle unless the patient calls us with the info or the explination as to where the info is. You have to go in manualy to overirde the system. Ours is 2 bills to the patient then it hits letter status saying its past due. It keep going till it hits the call list. If the patient calls and tells us the hold up or gives the info we fix the account. If they ignore the bills and the charges get too old, they are resonsible. Even if you have ins sometimes things happen so no one can assume we have the info because we are not mind readers lol. Sorry for the little rant type as I am sure you have called since the first bill and kept on top of it. When you call again ask for a supervisor and demand they put a hold on the account as you have kept in contact and its a matter of waiitng for id#.
