Make your own?

Has anyone made their own baby food?

I'm considering doing it since it's so easy. I already own a blender and I'll get some more ice cube trays. I feel silly paying for something I can do at home for cheaper. Supposedly I can make a week's worth of food in about 30 min. I'm looking into the different books that are out there for it, maybe I can find it at the library and photocopy what I need

nope - I just fed them jar for a bit then I gave them whatever we were eating at the time.

I made homemade for both the girls. All I did was puree' the veggies and freeze them in ice cube trays. Then, as they got older I puree'd anything that we were having for dinner and gave it to them when we ate. SOOOOOO much cheaper!! I did buy jar baby food for things that I couldn't easily make myself or that were special treats (like the desserts).

Did you just use regular trays? Or did you have covered ones. I'm worried about freezer burn.

Regular trays with seran wrap. Try that new press n seal stuff!

I've not done it, but I think you can pop them out of the trays and put them in ziploc bags after they're frozen. That way you avoid freezer burn.

I may do it this time. We don't tend to eat the variety of vegetables that I like to feed them, though. I really don't see how you could do it in 30 minutes per week. Do you have any links to share?

Well I've been looking at the SO Easy baby kit. Amazon's link

I've been checking out other books too. All you really need is a blender, a way to steam things (the microwave) and a way to store them. You just take the food blend it up, add a little water, breast milk or formula to smooth it out and freeze it. I'm thinking it might take me an hour or two but that's what they say.

I made some baby foods, and bought others. Mostly cuz I didn't have the patience for making it all (between work, home, and lack of sleep, I was lucky if I remembered to eat )

Someone gave me the book Super Baby Food, and it had some awesome ideas in it. As Joey was pretty much vegan (no dairy, egg, or meat) until 18 months, I did end up making a few things for him, like pudding (blending soft tofu and banana together) and things like that.

I know Yammie's making all her baby food at this point - she may have some pointers.

I made food for all three of mine. As a matter of fact, I actually wrote an article on it.

I made my own for Sammie and Karah.... I just pureed whatever we were having and put it in ice cube trays. Then when it was frozen I put it in a freezer bag. It was super easy

I made mine for all 3 too .. I swear by the book Super Baby Food .. REALLY worth the investment .. it gave me tons of ideas that I would never have thought of.

I used a covered tray that I had from Tupperware .. only because I had it. Would take them our of the tray and put into freezer containers. Pop 'em out the night before and put into small plastic containers in the refridg and the were ready for the next day!

I am making 98% of H's food. I bought a few jar etc so I could have the storage containers lol.
I use regular ice cube trays and press ans seal them., then I put them in zippy bags witht he name of whatever it is. I usually make about a week to a week and a half of veggies and some fruit. Bananas don't freeze well so I try to keep that fresh if I can at all help it.

I have found that one of those blender stick things work AWESOME. I have a Cuisinart one that came with a little cup and everything.

If you want your bananas to freeze better and not turn brown, put a few drops of lemon juice on them.

I did it once and it worked ok, but I can't get them to defrost right...easier to just make them on the spot she likes em fresh anyhow *giggle*

i make my own too but i buy some too just for like going out special occasions =). i just puree and sometimes add a teeny bit of water and i just put them in little tiny containers i bought at a store and i freeze them. dont put too much food in one sitting, your baby wont eat too much. i know i want to get chace off boob milk but i dont feed him to much aby food, it deprives him of my boob nutrients haha

Ice cube trays are great for freezing it, since one ice cube is one serving for babies. you could also use breast milk to smooth out what your pureeing instead of water if you want to be sure he's getting that.
