Jaundice and sleeping help?

Teagan has slept literally the entire day. I woke him up to eat several times, but he isn't waking on his own to eat. He sleeps, eats and poops ( normal for a baby I know) and I was told that the jaundice would make him sleep but as long as he was waking to eat it was ok. Well... does it count when I HAVE to wake him to eat? I'm worried about him. they said his biliruben was 12.5 and it is supposed to be below 12 so it's not that bad.. but... I'm worried. help!!!

He's only 6 days old...he'll be ok. I always had to wake mine up to eat.

Yeah, I think the point of "as long as he's waking up to eat" is not the waking up on his own part, but the eating part. You definitely should wake him up to feed him during the day. (I'm not sure about night). Lots of peeing is one of the things that will help with the jaundice.

Some babies are sleepier than others. (which I'm sure you know since this is your 5th ) My oldest I didn't have to wake up very much, but I sure did at first with Elizabeth.

Hope you can get some rest (whenever that may be )

how long is he nursing for when you feed him? If you wake him up and feed him more often that will help to flush out the bilirubin.....also if your weather is nice, lay him in front of a window so the sun can beat down on him.

If you are at all concerned hon then I would call your dr to be on the safe side. When does he go in for his next check up?

Cara had mild jaundice as well. We got her a natural sunlight lamp for her bed. It worked like a charm. She was over it in about a week. Since it was early January when she was born, actual sunlight wasn't an option.

I'm sure he's fine. When's his next check up?

Good job on the breastfeeding!

With it being chilly, sunlight isn't going to be easy, but we were told 20 minutes of sunlight on his chest a day - not through a window, though (that filters it too much). Of course, DS was an August baby.

He'll be going in for a well-baby check soon, right? Have them re-check his bilirubin, just to be safe.

Gabe was jaundice too. We had to take him in to have his levels checked after he was 7 days old. If it's not getting worse we were told not to worry. Some babies take a little longer then others to get rid of it. Call the doc hon, I'm sure they won't mind doing another check just to be on the safe side.

Gabe slept a TON early on too. As long as he's eating enough for the right amount of wet diapers I wouldn't worry about that either.

Than ks ladies, he's been up more this evening. He's nursing 10 mins before falling asleep and me having to wake him up again. But at least he is nursing. He's having plenty of wet and dirty diapers and I am trying to get him in the sun, but it's hard. It was really cloudy today. I guess I was just panicking. LOL He gets checked out by the home care nurse on Tuesday and then the doctor a week from tomorrow. I'm exhausted and I am so afraid he's going to be up all night long. He LOVES being held especially at night. He'll sleep during the day without being held but not so much at night.

Lenora! I am doing my best with the breastfeeding. Still challenging but at least I am doing it. I am determined to nurse Teagan as long as i nursed Kyan.

He'll probably be alright as long as he is eating when you wake him up. Braylen had to be on a bili blanket cause his bilirubin got really high (it was like 14 I think and climbing), but when he was woke up to eat he only ate for a few minutes so he ended up being on the blanket for 3-4 days.

Hope Teagan's jaundice clears up!
