Reaction to solid foods?

I fed Lizzie rice cereal for the first time yesterday. She's not quite 6 months old, but her doctor told me I could start her with rice cereal after 5 months if I wanted to. The main reason I wanted to is that she is so so tiny. I guess she's just a small kid, but I am having trouble believing that she's getting enough to eat.

So, I gave her one tablespoon of rice cereal mixed with water yesterday at noon. She seemed to love it. But last night she developed a runny nose and didn't sleep hardly at all. She screamed and wouldn't stop crying even when she was held. In the middle of the night it dawned on me it could be teething, but could this be an"adverse reaction" to the rice that I'm supposed to watch for? Everything I've read about introducing solids says to watch for reactions after you introduce a new food but never say what a "reaction" could include. (Obviously rashes and difficulty in breathing would be, I just didn't know if there were others.)

I've heard of indescribable screaming after introducing food. It could be bothering her tummy. I might try it again next week one more time to see if it was a coincidence or not.

Really babies under 1 year old aren't eating for the calories or nutrients in food. They're just eating to learn to eat. So if she's eating well otherwise and her growth curve is good it doesn't matter that she's tiny. Is she BF or FF? How much is she eating a day? How many wet diapers? That's the most important part. I'm sure she really is getting enough to eat and is just petite.

It *could* be a reaction - but did ya'll have any sort of a weather change yesterday? I'm wondering if she is a lil person who is extremely sensitive to changes, or if something blew in that stuffed her up, KWIM?

Yes, I know I'm a worrying hypochondriac She is breasfed so I don't know how much she gets per feeding. She only nurses 4-5 times per day now. She sleeps well during the day and at night (usually) which she wouldn't do if she were hungry I suppose. It's just that she only weighs around 13 to 13-1/2 lbs and she's almost 6 months old! She was on the 50th percentile curve on her initial checkups, but at her 4 month checkup she had fallen off to about the 20th. The doctor wasn't alarmed yet so I don't know why I am. She looks healthy. She acts healthy. She has plenty of wet diapers. Not very frequent dirty diapers though. Everyone tells me she's fine. I don't know why I have such trouble believing it

Yes, the weather has been crazy around here. My face feels ready to explode from sinus pressure. It was hot in her room. That's probably all it was.

Thanks I will stop worrying. I will stop worrying. I will stop worrying.

I wouldn't worry about her weight. .That sounds about where Lyssa was at 6months and she's fine now. (she was only 17 pounds at 1) As long as you know she's eatign and gaining something I think your ok.

Check your rice cereal to see if it has soy in it. I believe they put it in some cereals to add protein. Conor had a reaction to rice cereal and the doctor kept telling me that he couldn't , because he had never heard of it
It turned out they had started putting soy in it and we later found out Conor was sensitive to soy and had to same reactions your baby did.

I would wait a few days and then try again. Then if the same thing happens you'll know it was the cereal.

What kind of cereal do you buy? Kiera was sensitive to the Gerber brand, but when I used the organic rice cereal she had no problems at all. Not sure exactly why.

I did buy Gerber and I checked the ingredients and it does have soy! However, I don't think that's what's wrong with her because she's been sick all day with a fever and a runny nose. It's either a little cold or possibly teething. I'm going to wait until she's better before I give her any more food and I may have to go and fine some that doesn't have any soy in it. That is wrong to call something single grain and then have soy in it! (Although, I guess soy isn't technically a grain....)
