I need opinions on the boys' 7th bday party...

Ok, so this is the first year we are having an actual party for the boys because they have a summer birthday. We are bumping the party to June and passing out invitations the last week of class. So I want to go overboard. It's going to be in our backyard (it's huge) and I want opinions on theme and the fun stuff. Remember we are inviting TWO classrooms and then our family and friends.

The theme:

Is a pirate theme too babyish for 6- 7 year olds? I even found a pirate ship inflatable!

Now, I wanted to get the waterslide inflatable and Billy vetoed the thing. So if I have a bouncy and a face painter, shouldn't I have a 3rd thing to keep them occuppied? I was thinking a sundae making area, where they could make their own sundaes. Dumb?

Thanks in advance!

Oh and our backyard does already have a wooden plaything and swings and a zipline. There are things to do, but the thought of 30 or so kids bored scares me.

Oh my gosh! That sounds amazing! The best birthday party we ever threw was the Fear Factor one. It was messy, but tons of fun! It would have been even better if we could have just hosed down all the kids at the end!

I personally don't think the pirates them is to babyish .. I think it's pretty cool. How about a treasure hunt to keep them occupied? I still remember doing that at a birthday party when I was about that age and it was great!

By the way .... SEVEN??? When did they grow up??

I think the pirate idea is a great idea. Plus Oriental Trading Company has tons of cool pirate stuff for cheap.

Dawn, I can't believe they're going to be 7 either.

Look at these awesome invitations:

And the inflatable:

I like the pirate theme. Especially with Pirates of the Carribean being such a big thing recently.

I love the bounce thing. That is amazing. And the invitations are really cute!

Wow! Those invitations are awesome! I'd try to make them myself, but I'd probably burn the house down.

I say pirates is the way to go. What do the boys think?

Sounds great to me. I'm being lazy & throwing Ryan's very small 1st birthday party in the pre-printed CARS theme!

We just did a pirate party for my son's 6th birthday this September, the kids loved it. I made a Beware of Pirates sign for the front door and big red X to mark the spot the treasure map invites led to. I found some yellow tape that said "Beware-Enter if You Dare" at the dollar store that I strung around the door and inside the entry and cake table. I did balloons, plates, napkins, silverware etc., all in read and black. I even found some pirate decorations, ships and Jolly Rogers, to hang on the wall at the dollar store.

At the party store I found a pack of tattoos, they were 25 for $1, a big bag of pirate coins and some great eye patches with slits in them so that the kids could actually see through the center and I picked up bandanas at the craft store. When they came in the door we tattoed 'em and tied the bandana on and handed them an eye patch. We had pirate hooks too. You take a red plastic cup, cut an x in the top of it and use aluminum foil to make hooks, then poke it through, just make sure the foil is long enough to make a handle inside for them to hold on to. I don't know about the other kids, but my son played with his for a couple weeks until it finally died, lol.

Mostly the kids had free play time, about 45 minutes in we played a few games. I had "Pin the Patch on the Pirate", which they each played 3 times, lol. Then we played Musical Islands. I checked a pirate music CD out from the library and I used felt sheets from the craft store for the islands they stood on. When they were eliminated they walked the plank, a board on the floor with a couple toys alligators around it, and got a pirate coin at the end. After 4 rounds or so I told them enough time to do something new, lol. After the games we had a pinata, then cake and presents. I made a treasure chest cake with more pirate coins, those bright Mardi Gras bead necklaces, candy necklaces and Jujubes and Jujy Fruit "jewels".

Then the kids went back out into the yard and played the rest of the time on the wooden playset "pirate ship". Their gift bags were filled with more pirate coins, little telescopes, and some other pirate themed stuff I picked up, I even found pirate bubbles!

Look around online for ideas, there are a lot for pirate parties, cannonball water balloon fights, cakes, all kinds of cool stuff. And like someone else already said, Oriental Trading Company has all kinds of fun pirate theme stuff. Have fun
