Are these cribs really safe?

We gave our crib away about three years ago. So, I've been looking at cribs whenever we happen to be in a store that has one. Not that I have the intention of buying one right away, but still... It's fun to look.

The problem with most of the ones I've seen that were somewhat reasonably priced is that they just don't look sturdy to me. There's not a whole lot of foundation for the mattress to rest on, plus all of the latches are plastic. They just look like they wouldn't hold well, or they'd be prone to splitting/breaking/whatever. The lady in the store was just bragging on how much easier they are to let the side up and down. I couldn't even find the mechanism for that. I know how much Jonathan loved his crib, and how much he jumped in it, and how long he stayed in it. I just don't know that I'd trust one of these to last that long.

Does anyone have one of these that has the plstic latches and things? Are they really OK?

I don't have one with plastic. I think I'd be hesitant with plastic. The one i have has lasted through all 3 so far (and hopefully it will make it one more if we decide one more) and it can support all three of my monsters in it at one time. and can support 2 of them jumping Maybe google it and see if you can find a site that has reviews for it?

I had one of the $100 Jenny Lind cribs (don't remember how much of it was plastic) and it held up well.

That's what I had, too, Elaine. I loved it.

I have one that doesn't even have a lowering side so mine has NO plastic on it. There are metal brackets under the mattress support to lower that once Gabe can sit up. It also becomes a toddler bed and a head/foot board for a full size bed. My In-laws got it as our baby gift, I LOVE it.

Our crib has a lowering side, and it has some plastic on it. It was very pricey, and it's a piece of crap! To tell the truth, Emily slept in a portable crib until she was almost two, and then we made the actual baby bed into a toddler bed (it's one of those that goes from crib to toddler bed to full size bed). Now Travis is in the portable crib, too, mainly because the side that slides up and down on the baby bed no longer works. It won't even stay on the bed, so he'll be in the portable crib until he's ready for a toddler bed.
So, for us, the portable crib was a much more practical purchase, and it's very sturdy. It's not as ugly as it appears in the picture, and you can buy bedding for it, which we did.
