Kumon Learning Centers

Michelle mentioned them in my post about Cody's reading problems a few days ago and I've been checking them out. Has anyone else had any experience with them???

http://www.kumon.com/

I think that we need help with Cody and obviously, we aren't going to get it from the school system. This looks like it'll run around $100/month, which is pretty steep, but I'm thinking we can probably cover it through our Flexplan (hope so!) They have a free "assessment" and I'm thinking about just checking it out to see what it's all about.

Other than that, does anyone have any suggestions for teaching a child to read?? I just don't know how to do it. We have those little early reader books that are made for Pre-K kids and that's a struggle for him. There's only 3 to 4 words per page and they usually rhyme. He just "doesn't get it" and I don't know what else to do.

The expense is the hard part But its a lot cheaper than a lot of the other programs like Sylvan.....unless its different in the US, you have to sign up for a year, and it even goes during the summer.....

If you have any questions Dawn let me know....I don't think that the program is too much different in teh US than what it is in Canada

Oh gosh! I didn't know you had to sign up for a year. I was going to try it for a month or two to see how he does. With his learning issues, I hate to be locked into anything for that length of time if it doesn't do the job! Oh well ... I'll call and explain the situation, then see what they have to say.

Thanks again for the info Michelle!

Does he still enjoy his Leapster so much? I know that helped him a lot last year. Sounds like the schools in NC aren't much different than the ones here. Here most teachers don't have any special needs training no matter what the special need is.

Dawn, you need to look into finding a private tutor. Kumon is pricey, and if it's anything like Sylvan, Cody will not get one on one tutoring. They use only Kumon plans and Kumon materials, which is limiting in my opinion. A private tutor would customize plans and would be free to bring in a variety of materials. FYI--with a private tutor, you could possibly negotiate the rate if you agree to supply the materials, meaning, you pay for the workbooks, etc, and negotiate a lower monthly rate.
Also, I know the Club Z! that I tutor through offers scholarships, discounted rates, etc, for families who cannot afford the normal rates but really need the help. I think their website is www.clubztutoring.com

You might try the Elementary Ed/Special Ed/Reading departments at area colleges, too. They often have grad students that will do tutoring CHEAP!
