Phony fax gives prisoner almost 2 weeks of freedom

HICKMAN, Kentucky (AP) -- Officials released a prisoner from a state facility after receiving a phony fax that ordered the man be freed, and didn't catch the mistake for nearly two weeks.

Good grief! No one NOTICED that the fax came from the local Safeway (or whatever grocery store it was)?? You'd think they'd see that... and the lack of letterhead should also be a dead giveaway. Whoever sent it was probably doubled-over laughing at how easy it was to get one by the officials.

It's scary, really. What if the guy had harmed someone else?

If the fax only had a fax number and not the name of the grocery store, then no one probably would have known where it came from, unless they knew the fax # of the grocery store.
With that being said, it is definitely scary that they receive 'orders' to release someone via fax. Anyone cane fake letterhead if they have a computer. Obviously they didn't even have to go through the trouble of faking a letterhead, some people are just gullible. I am sure that now they will have a better policy in place when it comes to releasing prisoners.
