There was not anybody that I can remember that was black," she said. "The white people have theirs, and the black people have theirs. It's nothing racial at all."
Ummmmm???? how can that statement be taken as anything other than statement on race

I had to go back to the top of the page and check the date, I was sure it was going to be 1967 or even 1957 but 2007. I cannot believe that a dance made the newspapers in this day and age simply because the people attending the dance were racially diverse. I would assume that in this day and age that would be so normal as to be completely unremarkable.

The "white prom" still went on last week.
Now this one I would have thought would have made national headlines.

Why on earth would they have booked a seperate prom if they knew that the school was holding a prom? I'm pretty sure that the school would have been quite adamant about advertising their first big prom

I've asked, 'Why can't you come?' and they're like, 'My mommy and daddy -- they don't agree with being with the colored people,' which I think is crazy," she said.
I think we have an answer, Mummy and Daddy organised it, and as it was a formal prom I'm sure their sheets were all beautifully pressed.

But this year's upperclassmen -- 213 students total --voted to have just one official prom.
Congratulations to the school and the senior class for finally crawling into the 21st century (or even the 20th for that matter) They are obviously having to make their own decisions and go against their parents which is very hard for young adults. Their own children will hopefully look at this headline in years to come and wonder why on earth it was newsworthy as well.

I truely had no idea that attitudes like this still existed anywhere, I have never been anywhere in public that there was only 'white' people in my life, I simply cannot imagine what that would be like

wow this is sad that there was still someplace in the UNITED STATES that had segregated proms until this year.

I'm glad that the students voted that they wanted just one prom!

This reminds me of something that happened when I was in middle school. The entire 7th grade was going on a fieldtrip and it took two busses. I was sitting up front of one of the busses behind a group of teachers. About half way to our destination one of the teachers pointed out to another that there wasn't a single african american on the bus and this was a school where caucasions were the minority. No one told anyone what bus to get on ... Sometimes it has nothing to do with segregation but instead it's just culture and who and what you are comfortable with.

I live in an area right now where the population is 98% caucasion. Haley pointed it out quite a bit at first because it was so different to her.

I have been in those situations Maree and they are quite unpleasant. Hurray for those kids for breaking with "tradition" on both sides and starting a new better tradition.
