Clematis

Does anyone have any of these? Is there a trick to getting them to grow and stay healthy?

I bought two of these last year and planted them by our mailbox. They never really looked healthy last year when I planted them. Then they had an unfortunate mishap with a weed eater, so they never bloomed. I really thought they were dead, but they came out this year. One got frost bit, but the other one popped up a few weeks later and is climbing right on up the mailbox post. I want to get a couple more to put out there. But I haven’t had good luck with them before, so I’m not sure exactly what I need to be doing to help them take off a little better.

I don't know a whole lot about them but I do remember it taking about 3 years after planting for my mom's to look really nice and she said that is normal because they are establishing their roots. Also she pruned them back after flowering (once the flowers wilt and die) to allow new growth for the next year.

Well, then I guess chopping them down with the weedeater wasn't so bad after all.

We have ten different plants of them. We dont do anything at all with them. they say you should cut them back, but we never do, and they still come back looking good. you may have to wait about a year for them to really take off and bloom
