Moving with pets

Any time we've ever moved, we've always gone a short distance, so it wasn't a big deal to transport the pets from one place to another.

Does anybody have any tips for moving a long distance with a pet?

We moved not a real long distance (about 3-1/2 hours) when we had a cat. Our plan was to sedate her. Our vet gave us medication that we could give her. However, we couldn't get that cat to take the pill to save our lives. So we wound up just catching her and shoving her in her carrier. She wound up riding in the carrier without saying a peep the whole trip, but she was probably so traumatized she couldn't speak. You're moving farther than that though. Do you have to spend the night somewhere, because that would be tough. I would talk to your vet and see what they suggest.

When you get to your new place, let the cat out in a very small area first so they can get used to the change slowly.

Please disregard if you don't have a cat I thought I remembered reading about your cats.

When we left Connecticut we had 2 cats. We had to drive 3 hours to Newark, then stay at a hotel overnight before we flew out. We had them in their carriers in the car, they bitched on and off. Then we let them free in the hotel room and I bought a disposable litter box (It was awesome). Then we loaded them up and zipped off to the airport. Our vet refuses to sedate, but they weren't too bad really.

We moved from Arizona to West Virginia with three cats in a moving van. That was before we had kids. We kept them caged and let them out for bathroom breaks occassionally. We had one she curled up under the seat and was a perfect little angel the whole time.

One thing, if possible, aim the ac vent into his cage. Cats (at least mine) are creatures of absolute comfort and the ac blowing on them makes them more comfortable in the hot car. BTW, we did not sedate our three and they did just fine.

You should be able to get a mild sedative from the vet for the trip. It's like a valium. Lenora's right about the AC though cats can over heat when stressed.

My cats have always hated things blowing on them though...
