Why won't my kid let me teach him anything?

Now that it is summer and he is not in school, I want to sit down each day and learn letter sounds, numbers, writing, etc. He is adamantly opposed to it. He just wants to play. He has been in preschool for the last two years and does fine, but when I want to sit down with him, he just plays dumb. Some of his friends can write their names and know letter sounds but he doesn't and won't. Help!

Some kids just aren't receptive to their parents as "teachers". They do well in school, but they just don't want to hear about it when they get home.

Just because he doesn't want to sit down to do something doesn't necessarily mean that he's not learning. I had kids in my class that didn't want to sit with the group at group time, or they had their own agenda for doing things. But they could repeat everything I said verbatim later on, so they were learning in spite of us and what we were trying to get them to do. And their attention spans are sometimes shorter than normal if it's something they just don't want to do.

Does he like videos? There are some great learning videos and shows on TV. Not that I'd want to do videos and TV all day long, but there are some good ones. Leap's Day at the Letter Factory is a great video for letters and sounds. They even make up a little song to go along with the letter/sound combination for each letter.

Does he like to color? They have some great coloring/learning workbooks at the Dollar Tree and other dollar stores. I got Jonathan a Buzz Lighyear one and a 101 Dalmatian one to help with letter formation, numbers, etc. If he likes a MagnaDoodle, those are great for practicing writing, too.

I'll try to think of some other things. There are tons of printables and learning games on the internet. I used to have the links somewhere. I'll have to see if I can find them. I have some on disk, too, that I can send to you if you want.

My DD is around your son's age and she is basically the same way. But lately she's started asking how to spell things, what letters are what so she's hit that time where she wants to learn. Give your son time and he'll get it. He's only 4 and will learn what he needs to know in time. Does he know shapes, colors, can count to 10 or higher? If so then he's learning. I agree to not push and just follow his lead.

Does he have a Leapster? My dd has a very short attention span for regular teaching methods. But she will play with that Leapster constantly. It's her favorite toy.

He sounds like Logan. he will ignore me and not try to do a thing, won't count past five, give wrong answers to me. although just the other day i noticed him doing the stuff the right way when he thought i wasn't looking.

In time he will do it all. when does he start school? Logan doesn't go until september 08 so i have a ton of time to figure stuff out

And I wanted to homeschool... Yes, he likes videos and likes to color. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

He does know all of his basic shapes, colors and can count to 19. It's just hard not to push when you know that they are smart and can do better. His teacher says he's one of the "higher learners" in class. I'll try to be patient.

Grace,
He does like Leapster. I love the Leap Frog company and try to get a good amount of stuff from them to help him learn. It seems like when he comes up against something challenging, instead of trying to figure it out, he just gives up and walks away.

Andrea,
He starts PreK 4 in August. He went to preschool one day a week last year and is going twice a week this year. Next year it will be three times a week. They will teach him pre-reading, writing, pre-math, art, music, Spanish, computers and have a library day so I do hope he blossoms at that time.
