It sounds like the same person who took the Belgian girls took Madeline.

What I don't get is why in the world did her parents leave her (she's only four!!!!) and her 2 year old twin siblings alone in a hotel room??????? That is unbelievable. I feel sorry for that little girl but I just don't feel sorry for parents who leave their very young children unattended on purpose and then cry when they come up missing. That is what I'm gathering from the article. I didn't know they had done this until now (didn't pay much attn to the details of the case). Did I miss something?? Wasn't anyone supervising the children?

No, no one was supervising the kids. They were asleep and the parents thought they could enjoy a dinner in a restaurant nearby and check on the kids every 30 minutes. I would never in my wildest dreams do such a thing, but now these poor parents must live with that for the rest of their lives. I feel very sorry for them and the life they will now live without their sweet child....

I dont' understand how they could leave their 3 children alone either No matter what, I would never, ever leave my children alone like that....not at home....and DEFINATELY NOT in a strange country in a hotel room....

You are right Cheryl, I have a hard time feeling bad for the parents. THey are lucky that they did not lose all 3 children. It was a bad decision that they made, and will have to live with for the rest of their lives

Liz, your right about the culture aspect of it. I read more articles about this and some were saying what you said that it was acceptable to leave children alone since they don't have kidnapping situations as much as the U.S. does.

I did read that the hotel had babysitting services. I just wonder why they didn't use them. I guess they figured their children were safer alone than with a stranger.

It is amazing that the other two children were not taken.

Mike said that when he was in Norway, people used to stroll their babies up to the front of the restaurant/shops, then leave them in there while they went in to eat or shop. They have virtually no crime there, so it's not an issue.

I didn't read to see where these parents were from, but you have to feel for them. As dumb as their mistake may have been, it doesn't justify their child being taken (and possibly killed) by a stranger.

I hope those little girls are ok

Not excusing it for any reason, but I thought I read that the hotel room was in eyeshot of where they were eating. I still wouldn't have done it, btu I thought I read that.

It is incredibly sad.

The parents are British. I'm not sure what the kidnapping rate, if any, is like where they are from. Maybe they are like Norway.
