I stink at anything crafty. As a matter of fact, even the cupcakes I tried to make and decorate came out lousy. LOL
But then I got an idea when I was at the party store and made the cutest birthday cake for Cody. It's really simple, but looks nice. And beats the heck out of paying $20 to get one made at the grocery store!
The most expensive thing was buying the cake pan, but hey ... it was only $10 and that's an investment. I bought one of the deep layer pans (wedding cake deep -- 2"). Then I didn't have to mess with sticking 2 layers together (which I also stink at).
I made up some really easy white frosting from scratch (didn't particularly care for this recipe, so I'll find a better one and post it). After icing it, I sprinkled those little decorative candies all over.
Then I put one of those new edible silk screens on it. You can get them for around $2 at the grocery store, and the party stores have tons of them to choose from.
For another $2, you buy a large tube of colored icing and the plastic decorating tips. Then it's just a matter of making little stars all the way around the screen print and around the base of the cake.
If you are really brave, and don't run out of colored icing like I did, you could also write their name on the cake.
Any way ... here's how it turned out .... http://www.babyuniversity.com/forums...5&pagenumber=1
Beats the one I did last year with those sugar decorations ... almost everyone broke as I took it off the paper. LOL
