No safe haven: Diet sodas linked with health risks

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Sodas -- even diet ones -- may be linked with increased risk factors for heart disease and diabetes, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

They found adults who drink one or more sodas a day had about a 50 percent higher risk of metabolic syndrome -- a cluster of risk factors such as excessive fat around the waist, low levels of "good" cholesterol, high blood pressure and other symptoms.

Interesting article. I've pretty much cut out soda - I drink it maybe once a week or so - but mostly because I felt I didn't need the sugar, and I can't handle the artificial sweeteners.

I try not to drink diet sodas anymore. For a while there I would get charlie horse cramps in my feet and legs and once I stopped drinking diet soda they stopped. I'm still bad about having at least one or two sodas a day. I use to drink it about 3 times a day but I don't do that anymore and drink more milk now instead of soda.

I try not to drink too much diet coke/diet dr. pepper, my sodas of choice, more because of the caffiene than anything. I know water is really better for my body, so I try to drink that more than soda. However, I would like to see more research done on this. As the article stated, there is no conclusive evidence that drinking soda is the cause of these health problems.

while I'm sure putting lots of fake things into our bodies isn't a good idea I'm not so sure that it's ONLY diet soda/artificial sweeteners.

If I hear one more person tell me diet soda CAUSES MS I'm going to kick them. I've had quite a few well meaning people pass along an "article" about a lady who's MS went away after she stopped drinking diet soda

Oh good grief, Mel, are you serious? People are so clueless! What about people like my aunt, who has had MS for YEARS and has never, ever drank a diet soda? I am so sorry you have to deal with that.
My thoughts are exactly the same. I am not sure it's the diet soda that is the root of these problems. I would like to know how many of the people who participated in this study also eat foods high in fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and trans fat. How many of them were overweight or obese? So many other factors must be considered.

"On average, soda drinkers tend to eat more calories, consume more saturated fat and trans fat, eat less fiber, exercise less and be more sedentary," Vasan said in a telephone interview.
Basically all the study is saying is that diet soda drinkers are just as likely to develop metabolic syndrome as regular soda drinkers. I think the quote from the article provides a good explanation. The findings were not that diet soda caused heart disease, just that switching from regular to diet would not decrease your risk.

The headline was very misleading

If you change the soda and not the habits with the soda, I can see it. If you switch to diet sodas, and add in healthy habits...

Next thing you know breathing will be bad for you...

we've done the elimination thing. It's why we eat a lot of organics when I can afford them. That makes a difference.
