How to feed baby

How do you feed a baby solid food when not at home?
My daughter is six months and her pediatrician told me at her 6 month check up yesterday that she is to begin eating three meals a day now. Problem is I'm not sure how i can ever get out of the house as it is, now that i have to feed her three meals I might as well lock myself up for the rest of the year. I have things i need to do during the day that require me to leave the house (you know, shopping, visiting family etc). Not too often but often enough for it to run into her dinner or lunch times. Can any other mom's out there advise me on what to do when this happens? What do YOU do? Do you feed your baby solids in the street? Or in other people's houses do you feed your baby on your lap? Any help will be appreciated. She naps ten zillion times a day also and it must be in her crib so that alone makes it near enough impossible to get out.

I used to just carry jars of baby food with me and plastic spoons, and would feed them wherever I needed to (restaurants, friends' houses, in the car if need be). Actually, once she starts eating solids, it makes it easier to get some of the other things done because she'll stay full longer. Once she is ready for finger foods, just keep baggies of cheerios and other chopped up snacks to feed her in the shopping cart or wherever you happen to be.

It does seem like you're at their beck and call the first year, but pretty soon, she'll be in a schedule and you'll figure out a way to work around it.

By the way .... welcome to BabyU!

First of all, none of my kids were eating 3 meals a day at 6 months. They were all 3 breastfed and eating solids at least once a day, sometimes twice, but rarely ever 3 times.
Once they are eating 3 times a day, like Dawn said, carry a jar of baby food and a plastic spoon in the diaper bag and feed wherever you are.
I know some people who used the bottles intended for feeding infant cereal or who would even cut the holes bigger in a few nipples and feed runny cereal that way but most doctors don't recomend doing that.

I think my son was eating one meal a day solids - the rest formula - at 6 months, but he was a bit premature, and our ped wanted us to wait.

I'd figure on feeding some sort of cereal for breakfast, then go run morning errands. If you're going to be out long enough for you to think about lunch for you, then consider bringing a bit more cereal or baby food (small baby food jars make excellent cereal jars, too - just add a bit of formula, and you're ready to feed), just in case. Dry baby cereal in a jar doesn't have to be eaten within a certain time frame or anything - if you don't use it, then just store it until the next outing.

As for visiting family and such - many times, family LOVES feeding babies. Let someone else do it if they want - they get the fun, and you get a break.

My son is 7 months old and he definitely wasn't eating 3 meals a day a month ago. He doesn't even eat three meals a day now. We do a morning and an evening food meal and formula the rest.

I always carry a large ziploc bag with several little containers of baby food and plastic spoons, as well as snacks, in the diaper bag. I have formula for my son and sippy's (juice/milk) for my daughter, as well as a couple small containers (juice/milk) made up and ready to go in a soft sided cooler with cool packs to take with us on our trips. I just take the diaper bag with one drink for each kiddo into the places we need to go. If the baby needs to eat, no problem. Just pop open a container of food and there ya go. Most of the time I watch when the kiddos are getting hungry, then go to lunch or whatever. That way you have a highchair to put your kiddo in, you can feed them, then get a quick bite yourself. I usually hit one of the local fast food places...you can get things that work for both you and the kids -- a lot of places around here are now putting a lot healthier items on the menus... it's GREAT! If it's early enough -- when they first open about 11 am.... you can get in and out of there quickly with minimal issues, as not many people are there. Staff are usually pretty good at helping a parent with a child by carrying the tray... or you could just go to a sit down restaurant.

And if I'm visiting people, they usually have never had a problem with me feeding my kids. I just hold the baby and feed him. My daughter's pretty self sufficient and can sit nicely on a regular chair and feed herself.

Good luck and Welcome to BBU!

the ladies have had some great tips for you, I think that three meals is a hard one to expect for sure. i like Judy's idea of dry cereal in a jar in the diaper bag.

I used to carry around alot of snacky treats, cookies that are made from cereal and melted in his mouth were awesome. cherios of course
