ya y or nay: Should Lisa Nowak's ankle bracelet be removed?

First of all, here's the story.

What do you think? Should they remove her ankle bracelet?

Normally, I would say no, because swimming, exercise and embaresment do not outweigh the risk of flight. However, this woman lived a beyond exemplary life before this incident. She is in the Navy where exercise and swimming are most likely a part of her required duties. As for embarassment, she is not a no one, she's a former astronaut and every time that buzzer goes off in public, it draws attention not only to her, but to all astronauts in a negative way. It seems like the Navy has pretty good tabs on her. She's not going anywhere anytime soon.

She's not Lindsey Lohan or Paris Hilton. She's served her country with honor for many years. She's been an excellent role model, mother, American and sailor for many years. For these reasons, I think she deserves a little leeway. After all, this was just a momentary lapse of insanity in an otherwise exemplary life.

As for the company giving out her whereabouts to reporters to advance their business, they deserve to loose their contract over that. Their job is to monitor her movements, not be a tool of the media.

Maybe I'm being harsh, but I say no. She committed a crime regardless of who she is and what her past has been like. Kidnapping, Battery, and Burglary aren't minor offenses. She should deal with the hassle and humiliation of the monitoring device just like anyone who is less news worthy would have to.

I am totally against the company using the information for media though.

I think she should keep it. We go on and on about celebrities being treated the same when they are out drunk driving why should she be different.

The company using it for the media is a different issue all together.

i say she should keep it on, the alternative is still being in custody no?

life is difficult but free. for now anyhow
post #6 of 21
Gee, life sucks when you try to kidnap someone. I don't think they should use her as a media guinea pig however.

Do the crime, do the time.

Absolutely should NOT come off. Hey, I'm sure EVERYONE who has an ankle bracelet is troubled by it and/or embarassed. Just like people in jail are inconveniened. They all lost the right to have a say about their freedom when they were convicted. She's lucky she's not in jail.
Okay, well since she is a CRIMINAL and this was part of her PUNISHMENT, hell no it shouldnt come off until of course she either exonerated of all charges or she finds jail to be less of a "hassle"
I dont' think it should matter who she is....she did the crime and she needs to learn to live with the consequences

As for the monitoring company giving out information, they should be charged as well. They should not be giving out anyone's information

Whatever she intended to do, she did not do. She did not kidnap anyone. She did not steal anything. What she did do is spray pepper spray in her romantic rival's face. The other woman drove away unimpeded and otherwise unharmed almost immediately after it happened.

It wasn't a nice thing to do, but I've heard of women doing a lot worse things to the other woman.

People can't be convinced of things they think about. Only things they actually do. The cops have really done her a disservice the way they have released information about the case in sort of a baised way. Like she didn't really wear an adult diaper the whole trip. When escaping from hurricane Katrina and stuck in traffic with few alternatives, she peed into her kid's pull up.

The Navy's been keeping tabs on people for over 200 years. I think they can handle her too. Other celebrities are not currently serving in the military.

As for her somehow acquiring the other woman's security badge, well, that woman was an officer (now kicked out of the Air Force for reasons unknown). She had the briefings. She knew the drill. She should have kept better tabs on her controlled items than she did. Her loose controlled of her badge put the whole country in jepardy. My pity for her over loosing her badge is zero. What if a terrorist or a member of a hostile foreign government had gotten that badge instead of a fellow military member? They would potentally have had access to all the secure areas she did. I would really like to know why she got kicked out of the Air Force. She's not the little sweetie she's trying to appear either.

The man not only got kicked out of NASA, he got kicked out of the Navy. The only on e in that trio still serving is Lisa Nowak. There's a lot more than to that story than we know.

Uh, if I get a DUI and lose my license, should I get it back b/c it's an inconveneince to take the bus? No. I should have thought about my conveniences b/f breaking the law. And just cause other people do bad things, ti doesn't excuse her poor (and illegal apparently) behavior.

And you're wrong about hinking bad things not being illegal--intent is a crime.

This story did not even rate a mention over here in Oz but I have followed a few links to the story from this site.

1; As a lot have people have said if the anklet is inconvenient she can always take it off and go to prision. (Question: is she on remand or has she already had a trial and been convicted?)

2; The company whose employee gave priviliged, confidential information to the press should be fined severly and hthe staff member involved shoulld have their security licence revoked.

3; Surely she knows approxiamately when the battery is going to die (6 hourly, 12 hourly etc) and can plan her day around that knowledge. It cannot be that much of a surprise if she needs to change the battery every 6 hours that 5.5 hours after the last battery change she goes shopping and the darn thing's alarm goes off. Sheer common sense would fix the embarrasment problem the alarm causes.

Wo, Liz. You're the expert on everything from how to raise my kids to Lisa Nowak. I'm so lucky to know you.

This is a debate thread, Lenora, you asked people's opinions, I think she was offering hers.

This is about something else. I shouldn't have taken it here. But I'm really tired of LIz telling me what an awful mom I am. I felt the need to stand up for myself for once.

Liz, I know you think I am a terrible mom. I've heard you. You've been validated. Now go bother other people.

Nah, I am the lucky one to know her and be her bestest friend. Y'all only get a teeny tiny glimpse into what a highly intelligent and wonderful person Liz really is.

However, the comments toward her are so not necessary. This is a freaking debate thread. Though that meant that everyone was allowed their own opinion without being personally attacked. Apparently not.

And to get back on topic, I agree with everything that Liz has posted.

This doesn't happen often but I agree with Liz too.

If ya didn't want an opinion ya shouldn't have started a debate.

I just don't get how everyone can complain that celebs are getting away with stuff and you think that THIS celeb should get special treatment? How is she any different then the other celebs that are "inconvenienced" by their devices. Do the crime, do the time.
No, it should not be removed.
Leave it on. It's too bad that she is inconvenienced by it, but that's the choice she made when she broke the law and tried to do harm to another person. Maybe her past record is clean, but does that mean she did no wrong before or just never got caught? It's irrelevant, really, because she is lucky to not be serving time for what she did do.
