Wacky Supply Lists

Has anyone gotten a supply list with some off the wall items on it this year?

We haven't gotten ours yet for this year but there was one year that the items on Haley's list weren't really crazy but weren't "school supplies" either... There were more items like ziplock bags and hand sanitizer than there were crayons and paper.

Yeah we had clorox wipes and kleenex and they were specific as to what kind of eraser to have (brand and everythign. Then she needs 10 washable markers - well they sell 8 packs and 12 packs. other than that there really isn't anything that's off the wall.

I think it's sad that we have to buy any major school supplies (but if taxes were higher, I'm sure we'd complain about that too) but other than pencils, glue, etc., my DS's 2nd grade list has Kleenex, paper towels, quart and gallon zip lock bags. We will get the Kleenex and paper towels because I know they get used but don't know about the zip lock bags. If every child brings a box of each, what do they get used for? So for that, we'll wait until we talk to his teacher about. The teacher's wish lists usually include hand sanitizer and more Kleenex which I have no problem providing either to make sure my kid's hands are kept as clean as possible, especially during cold season

The thing I was surprised with Austins list is a calculator. He is going into grade 3. We were allowed to have calculators until highschool!!

OK my dd's school supply list drives me nuts!!!

We have to buy "communal supplies" that the teacher will give out as students need them. (i.e. i had to buy 20 pencils--that have to already be sharpened, 6 white erasers, 2 24 packs of crayons, 8 pack of markers, 6 glue sticks, etc..) Then she has her personal stuff. Go figure...then to top it all off, we have to pay school fees too....and bussing fees.....hell the bussing fees alone are $150 FOR EACH KID (up to a maximum of $300 per family)....as our kids get older...bussing fees go up.

Yeah, that's what I was complaining about here, Michele. I read in the paper the school supply lists included things like digital cameras, reams of paper, cash(???!!!) and stuff like that. It's supposed to be free according to the state constitution. Tucker and Upser counties are with the program and have been for years. If Tucker County had better roads and more conveninces we would definitely live there. Their schools are NASA challenge schools. We've really thought about moving to Tucker County, but not being able to get anywhere in the winter is the big stopper.

I have NO problem supplying things like tissues and hand sanitizer... I know what they will be used for and appreciate my child having them available when needed. It's when I'm asked to provide things like batteries, red pens, and dry erase markers that I feel things are out of hand. Those supplies are obviously for the teacher and not the child's use.

I would have a big problem with "communal" supplies as well. The supplies I buy for my child are for my child. But I will donate items for kids whose parents either can't afford what they need or are just too sorry to buy them. Donating and being required are completely different.

As for things the teacher needs, we've been lucky and not asked to buy anything like that. Everything we've bought since DS has been in school has been used by him. If and when we are asked for "teacher" items, we'll handle that on an item-by-item basis. Those things should be on wish lists and not on required lists anyway.

I'm most upset at the fact that school starts in 2 weeks and we haven't officially gotten the list OR the class assignments! :flame:

We did pick up the lists as they became available at Walmart (strange that Walmart gets them before the parents do!) but they didn't show up until AFTER tax-free weekend, which really pisses me off!

However, I don't like the fact that two of the kids had to have packs of dry erase markers. Those suckers are $5 a pack! And the field trip fees get ridiculous! Kindy ends up being $35+ and then there are the other two kids as well!

I guarantee you I spend darned near $100 on crayons, paper, kleenex, etc, etc by the time I go through all 3 lists!

I guess we were lucky - my soon-to-be second grader was sent home at the end of last year with a supply list for second grade and it's been posted on his school's website since school ended as well. So we knew what to get and were able to hit the sales. I'm sure they don't change that much each year and don't see why all schools can't do the same.

All we had was a roll of paper towels, a box of Kleenex, a folder, and extra set of clothes (in case of a potty accident) a backpack. We pay a supply fee, I thought that was great! I will give them the fee with a smile on my face because I didn't have to go to the store and buy it myself!

Ours was relatively normal (and it has been available on the district's site since June), except I am still trying to figure out why they need regular glue and glue sticks. School supplies aren't too bad here, if I shop the sales, for both boys it runs me about $40 and then I get their backpacks and lunchboxes. Ends up mabye a little over $100 for the boys.

Olivia is in the Montessori and they have a supply fee that we pay, $100 for the year and there is only one of her. She only has one more year there and we can send her for 2nd grade to the elementary with her brothers.

Don't you love that Dana? Either they make the list really specific and we freak out because we can't find 10 packs of Crayola Washable Markers or they are too general and we freak out because we may not be buying the right thing.

Thomas has yet to get his list but I have been MAJOR stockpiling on things like crayons, glue (both stick and liquid),pencils and pens ( Gotta love Staples 1 cent sale, lol),folders, notebooks, binders. Between my sister and myself I think we could easily supply her school and mine, lol. But like I said, Staples had some great bargains and since we have several stores in our area, I hit them all. What I have left I plan to give to a church that makes baskets for the needy.

One thing that irritated me is that they were so specific about brands. They have to have CRAYOLA WASHABLE MARKERS. That's $3/pack. The Rose Art were on sale at Walmart for 50 cents! :flame:

My boys lists aren't to bad. The only thing I disagree with is the 20 mechanical pencils(they are to have regular pencils to). I don't see why they need to use them, and I certainly don't understand why they need 20(aren't they reusable). They better last the whole year because I will only buy regular pencils after that.

I don't pay attention to anything that says a name brand. I get whatever is on sale and don't care if they don't like it. I don't mind buying most of the stuff, but don't tell me what brand I have to buy.

I haven't got Chris's list yet - only got a school donation/wish list for stuff like kleenex and hand sanitizer. I'm praying they give me some kind of list of the stuff he'll actually need, cuz I am clueless. I haven't been in first grade for a long time . Was actually annoyed they would give me a list of what they would like for the school first, cuz tho I am happy to donate stuff and help the school, I'd first rather concern myself with what my child needs. They are having an Open House on Wednesday, so the kids can meet the teachers and newer students can see the school. Also is for picking up your childs bus pass pin. I'm hoping the teacher will give us a list then. If not I'm gonna ask about it cuz school starts the following Wed.

Check your school's (or district's) website for the supply list....
