I hate homework time

I have it pictured as this hour where the kids sit nicely at the table with their books spread out in front of them and me taking free minutes out of preparing dinner to come over to the table and answer questions or help with a problem they can't figure out.

OMG, instead it is two hours of hell where no one can get on track, Zach whines for snacks and soda regardless of the fact that I have dinner preparations underway, and Haley screams at people to shut up because she can't concentrate. I spend more time ending arguments and threatening beatings than helping answer questions and I can feel my blood pressure rise thinking of all the things that need to get done if only they would finish their homework.

Elaine, that sounds terrible. Do they have that much every night?

I have a lot of kids who NEVER do their homework. It's district policy that they get homework every night in every subject.

I give you a lot of credit for making sure they get it done and for giving them a good environment for doing it. :wtg:

Zach's is fairly simple but getting him to just sit down and do it isn't.
Haley on the other hand has a good amount of homework. Today she had to write her spelling words 3 times and do a page in her vocab book for English, Do a worksheet on surveying for Social Studies?, and do 2 pages in her math book. She is also VERY easily distracted and really would benefit from a quiet room but if she's by herself she tends to get off focus and do other things.

Elaine I can so relate! Tessa screams at her sisters if they come in the room while she is doing homework. And it's homework that if she would just sit and concentrate would take her maybe 15-20 min... instead it normally takes at least an hour of "Go sit back down, stop talking, no you can't do that, leave your sisters alone... |"

I am going to make an odd suggestion. You know the ear muffs they use at shooting ranges(you can get them at most hunting and fishing stores and probably walmart, though I have never looked)? If you can find a pair, try letting Haley wear them at the table when doing her work. That way she is where you can keep her on track, but she can concentrate better.
As for Zackary, maybe cut up celery and carrots, or fruit in small bites and having them near by with a cup of juice, milk or water. At least then if he munches it may "ruin" his appetite for dinner but at least it was done healthy.

Bridget... I like the ear muff suggestion! I may have to try that with Tessa

I am getting a pair for Josh next payday. He has the same issue, and I think they might make a world of difference. They block out enough sound to help them focus, but they can still be where they can get help. I suggested it to someone at the end of last year and she said it has done the trick.
