HI all Long time no see
I have a question. My cousins son is 8months old. Recently he started gagging on all veggies, any sugguestions? and
2)- Her son sucks the food off of the spoon, does not chew, its not the tongue thrust reflex (he doesnt push the food out of his mouth) he just sucks it off of the spoon, should she be concerned? She is a little worried, Ive tried to assure her there is nothing wrong with him, but she thinks he should be taking the spoon into his mouth by now, he has hit all his milestones with everything else. thanks for any suggestions you've got

Are we talking about babyfood veggies? From what I remember, babies don't really start making chewing motions or really moving food around their mouth until texture is introduced which shouldn't happen until closer to 10 months. While she should be trying to introduce the spoon, the fact that he slurps and swallows shouldn't be much of a concern.
As for the gagging I don't really know what to say... Is she feeding him bites that are too large? Does he just object to the taste? Are they actual veggies or pureed? It could be any number of things.

Hi, He's fed jarred baby food, he was eating fine and then got a cold a month ago, cleared up and now he gags on any vegetable, they are for his age (6+months), the 8 month foods are too chunky for him since hes not chewing. I babysit him and Max is 6 weeks older and Max (or my girls) never slurrped off of a spoon so I'm no help for her. I keep telling her he's fine but its the fact that he wont take the spoon in his mouth and doesnt make the chewing motion , worries her( she read in her baby books that he should be by now) This is her first baby and shes a young mom, so shes a tad bit nervous with alot of stuff. Anyway I just wanted to see if anyone had any info for me, I think hes doing great, and am not concerned at all, I also told her some babies get turned off of certain foods after an illness and you kinda have to start over...... thanks elaine

I'd tell her babies don't read books, how are they supposed to know what they should do

My son is 8 1/2 months old and he's JUST started chewing things. He loves gerber puffs (they dissolve in the mouth).

I wouldn't worry either, all babies go at their own pace.

At that age, I don't think I'd be super concerned. I would run it by the Pediatrician if it is so unsettling. Now... MY son is another story.... he's 17 months & gags on pretty much anything. He eats #2 & #3 baby foods, drinks soy milk and will actually try to chew club crackers & ritz crackers. He has started eating "squishy" breads like dinner rolls and bread sticks. He will be going in for his 18 month visit in the very near future & I'm going to talk to my Ped about a Speech Therapy consult.

Bottom line.... at 8 months, not so much worry.

At close to 18 months, I"m concerned.
