So Tessa reads above a 6th grade level... This is causing a few problems here, for one thing she has now been told that she isn't allowed to talk about her reading level with people. Apparently she was hurting other kids feelings, so we were asked to tell her to stop mentioning it. Here is the problem though, Tessa is proud of how well she reads, and now feels like she isn't allowed to even talk about what she is reading outside of school. How do I teach her to balance this? I don't think it's fair that she isn't allowed to talk about what she is reading (which gives away her lexile score being right around 1000, average in her class is 250-300). I want her to be sensitive to other people's feelings, but still proud of herself.

Also some suggestions on book series that she might like! Most of the ones she is bringing home from the school library are way too easy, and then the ones I'm finding that are the right level for her are too grown up in subject matter.
HELP!

Hon my kids are reading books such as..

The Count of Monte Cristo,
20000 leagues under the sea
Treasure Island
Eleanor Roosevelt
David Copperfield
The man in the iron mask
the three muskateers
journey to the center of the earth
Sherlock holmes
Phantom of the Opera
White Fang ( Duncan's favorite)
We have well over 20 of them.

Now these are adapted versions still a high reading level ( somewhat on their ability level, some lower..none higher than they can read. ) but.... they leave out truly gruesome parts and anything sexual is cut out as well.

Great Illustrated Classics, is the series. Here

Shona, we have some of those books that I bought before we came to Germany. Tessa loves them... Black Beauty is her favorite I think, although she has read all the ones we own repeatedly. Problem is they dont' sell them here at the PX.... Hmm, wonder if they have them on Amazon.

I have no other suggestions hon. What about some of the books you read when you were younger. Maybe some of the "are you there God, it's me margaret" books.. cannot remember the author's name to save my life.

What about books like The Little House series, The Secret Garden, and the Ann books (green gables, avonlea, etc.) ?

Does she like ghost stories? My daughter and I both love the books by Mary Downing Hahn like The Doll in the Garden and Wait till Helen Comes.

Tessa loved Superfudge (another Judy Blume)... and I am silly enough not to have thought of the Anne of Green Gables series even though those were my favorite books as a child!

They should encourage her reading, not make her feel like she has to hide being above level. Devon has always read and spelled well above grade level, but in his school each class is designed to cater to that. For example the weekly spelling list is broken up into groups. They have red, white, blue, green, and orange. Each group has 30 words, but are different grade levels. Red is 4th grade, white is 5th, blue is 6th and so forth. Devon gets bored so I'm glad this school is set up that way. The local school only did what they 'needed'.

Have you thought about looking for some supplement homeschool programs to challenge her? Maybe buying some stuff like that on her grade level will have some appropriate reading.
