Anyone have a child with speech problems?

Nathan has a severe speech problem.. he's very hard to understand... he's been going to speech therapy at the preschool and we're noticing some improvement.

He was evaluated by a psychologist on Tuesday and she thinks that he has apraxia. Does anyone have any experience with this speech problem?

We have a meeting with the teacher, speech therapist and psychologist tomorrow about this and to decide what course of action to take.

Ryan's 18 months old and I'm taking him to Occupational and Speech Therapies. It was primarily b/c I was concerned with his eating and speech development. It seems he has a sensory disorder and issues with proprioception. He's actually starting to talk more and put more foods in his mouth.

I know it's not the same thing, but I just wanted to share how much those therapies really help.

My older son had apraxia. It's a motor planning problem. The signal from their brain to their mouth gets scrambled and makes it hard for them to talk. They know what they want to say, but have trouble getting their mouth to form so the words are spoken properly. Intensive speech therapy will help. Ask his speech therapist to give you mouth exercises you can work on at home that will help him get used to working the muscles in his mouth and working on the sounds associated with muscles. (For example, lips are together to make the "m" sound, the tongue goes to the roof of the mouth to make the "la" sound.) The most important thing is to find a good speech therapist. If your son is apraxic, it's good that his speech therapist recognizes what the problem and most likely she knows what to do to help him. My son had a few therapists over the years that didn't know what to do with him, which was frustrating for all of us.

My son started speech when he was almost three. He's 8 1/2 now, and speaks very well.

None of mine have any speech problems. I just wanna offer you hugs. I had speech problems when I was little and had special classes and therapy during school I went too.

thanks everyone...I appreciate it.

Jennifer, the speech therapist is very good and he likes her a lot and loves going to speech. She has been working on him with mouth exercises and is supposed to be sending us home some different things to try with him. i just hope that the speech therapist he has next year is just as good.

All 3 of mine have had speech delays, so I can definitely sympathize! It's great that he's receiving therapy and the fact that he likes the therapist will be incredibly beneficial. Ours has proven to be quite an advocate for Cody. Cody had the most severe problem of my crew and we found out last year that he has CAPD.

Connor is in speech therapy to. He was considered severe at first, but he is really really improved with therapy this year..
With speech therapy it takes time. It could be a good couple of years or more that Connor is in speech. I do notice a huge change in him though, but he still has a long way to go.
