Do you pay for good grades?

I'm at my wit's end with Jessi. She doesn't seem to have any motivation to complete her work, at home OR school. We've decided to start "paying" her for good grades on her report card. We're thinking about $10 for each "A" and $5 for each "B". The catch is that she has to pay US $5 for each "D" and $10 for each "F". Hopefully there won't be any of the latter. We also told her we'd give her $100 for straight "A's".

However, she will have to put 1/2 of whatever she earns into a savings account, then the other half is hers to spend as she'd like.

I want to do something similar with the boys, but they are still graded on the number scale and since Cody is struggling to stay at grade level, I don't think that's fair to him. We were thinking about the fact that at their ages, basically if they behave in school, they'll do fine academically. Because of this, I was thinking that maybe they could earn $1 per "S" (satisfactory) and $5 per "O" (outstanding). I'd make them put 1/2 in savings as well.

Would like to hear from those that have tried this type of system. Does it work? Am I teaching them to excel for the wrong reasons?

We do that with Liz.....sort of. She is on the number system too. My brother and I earned money for our report cards too. I think it helps. If you work in the real world, then we all get (well ok a lot of places) will reward you for a job well done. If you have an evaluation, you usually get rewarded with a pay raise. Some places give out bonuses for excellent work and stuff.....so why not in school too.

Its does not necessarily have to be money.....it can be a treat of some sort (so many a's and b's then they can go to a movie with a friend, etc...O

This is the first year that Alyssa gets grades. (she was on the S/O/E type thing for Kindy) Not sure if we are going to do anything yet. haven't really discussed it.

My praents paid us based on A's and then when we got into HS we got a reward for making honors or HIgh Honors.

We do the same thing Dawn .. $10 for an A, $5 for a B and $2 for a c (because c is actually average), D, they pay us $5 and an F they pay us $10 plus they are on restriction until it is atleast a C. Straight A's they get $50 (because they only have 4 blocks) and they keep 100% as fun money.

I think it's a good idea for the boys, Dawn.
It's still rewarding Cody for trying his hardest, and doing the best he can!

I was paid for good grades too, I think it does keep a little motivation inside kids.
We've done that with Austin (I think 2nd grade starts the 'real' grading- we'll see in a couple weeks).

Kale is on a treasure box reward system .. I went to the $ store and for everyweek he stays on blue or green he gets one item out of the box, When we get his report card (all 1 - 3) he gets $2 for each 3 and $1 for each 2. He has never gotten a 1 so I'm not sure what we' do.

I think its a great idea.... I'm not sure if we'll do that with Jacob this year or not... I have a parent-teacher conference next week and get report cards then too... maybe we'll decide then.

I would love to be able to do something like that but honestly don't have the money. While I'd be extremely proud, I'd also be screwed if she ever brought home straight A's.
