Movie coming out in December

Please read the attached article about the new movie called the Golden Compass that will be released this December 7, 2007. It is a children’s movie that was written by an atheist. He is anti- C.S. Lewis. The message of the movie is basically to kill God! Please read this and pass it along to any unsuspecting parents. We definitely don’t want to purchase a ticket by mistake and subject our children to such a horrible movie.

Thanks for taking the time to read,

So? The books are well written. We've listened to them. Yes, I felt the anti-God in the books. Didn't bother me, or any of my kids.

If the children are strong in their faith to whatever religion they happen to believe, then there isn't any worries. It's like blaming metal music for murders. It's not the gun that kills but the person holding it.

Yes IF the children are strong in their faith. When was the last time a 5 yr old could tell you all there was to know about their Faith?

And I am all for taking your children to see a movie that depicts the killing of God, if that's how you want to raise your children, however I posted this because there are those of us who do not want our children seeing such a movie and it is going to be advertised greatly and for those who do not know what the movie is about and take their children, unsuspectingly, it would be EXTREMELY upsetting.
That's your "so?"

Well said, Shona! Children are just that, children. They are not little adults. They are impressionable, and as a Christian, I believe, as the Bible says (in Proverbs), Raise a child in the way he should go, and even when he is OLD, he won't depart from it. It takes a while for that training to set in, and I would not expose my CHILD to what's in that movie.

My kids and husband want to see this and frankly, they probably will. I think "anti" campaigns have the exact opposite effect...it makes everyone what to run out and see what all the fuss is about. It worked for HP and it will work for this series as well.
As for the context being anti religion, I would think that if( it sounds unlikely from what I read about the movie) a child picks up on that theme, it would be a great teaching opportunity for the parent. As for the book series, it is geared towards young adults(as is HP) and therefore another good opportunity to open frank discussion about faith and God.
You are correct that they are not little adults...but we as parents are adults and it is up to us to use things like this to teach our kids. They will come acrossed many many people who do not share our/their beliefs in this lifetime and will have to deal with it.. As was said, they are impressionable....we need to take the time to make our own impression on them...and this is just another opportunity.
From what I have seen this isn't a movie geared toward toddlers and very young kids...it's not a cartoon...and it's been watered down for the general public and had the most blatant religious aspects removed from it. As for the books...it's not like they are handing them out with the movie tickets...if you don't want your kids to read them...don't let them.

My "so" was, why freak out over a movie?

Bridget said perfectly what I was thinking (thanks!).

State the facts if that's what you are trying to do. If you are trying to spread facts, leave out the opinions and the pleas.

Just because you are strong in your religion doesn't mean everyone everywhere is. Just because your five year old may not be comfortable in his faith doesn't mean someone else's isn't. My kids have every right to be screwed up religiously. I'm Jewish and my husband's not. We celebrate all the holidays and presents both religions as equally as possible. And yet, not of them were traumitized by listening to the books.

Plus, like it was said twice already, the movie will be watered down quite a bit. What five year old will catch that bit of info on his own?

Wasn't similiar controversy created over the Harry Potter books & movies? Look what happened there. Create a big anti-Dark Materials stink and guess what ... people will run to see it, boosting it's sales and popularity even more!

Do as you feel is right for your family and I'll do what I feel is right. That's the wonderful thing about being Americans, hun.

This wasn't about what is right for my family or for yours. This was merely to let others know what the movie was indeed, about! That's all, Geez, It was I n f o r m a t i o n. If you didn't want opinions, why bother posting about it? I didn't post my opinion until after you did. What I posted was a direct copy from a website. I'm terribly sorry I didn't use quotation marks.
Get all up on your high horse if you feel the need to, but all I did was post a NEWS PIECE that some might find helpful.

I never, not once said my child was not COMFORTABLE, in his faith. I said most five year olds could not tell you all there is to know about their faith. My five year old can tell you what we believe. And I am sorry, but even with my kids IQs being well over 140, even THEY aren't able to discern what is right and wrong all the time when it comes to religion and theology. So I am pretty darn sure, IF there IS a five year old out there that can.. we'd have heard about that child in the news by now.

I think Shona is getting upset because she felt she was posting in Headlines, not Great Debate. I agree, no need to start some argument unless you want to move the topic to the other section...

My kids won't see this movie or read the books. That's the choice I made and my kids are well educated in their faith. I had already read about it, but I figured many people hadn't.

I appreciate the heads up. I personally had not heard of this movie - but then again my kids only bug me to see cartoons. So unless it's something DAD wants to see (which I HIGHLY DOUBT) it won't be seen in our house either.

I have been following this controversy for awhile now and actually got the first two books in this series from the library yesterday (they finally got them in) and am currently enjoying the first one.

I am one who will not form an opinion until I am educated on the matter. This is one of those movies that, like Harry Potter, the media is putting out just enough to create interest and then many pick up on the "anti-God" and "anti-religious" quotes from the religious sect and don't bother to read the books to get the whole meaning themselves. I won't rely on what others say about the books and won't form my opinion by just reading a few selected paragraphs out of the book. Or from what the author himself says.

If I decide after reading the books that I don't want my kids to read them, they won't. But if I think they are fine and won't "harm" my kids, I'll let them once they are old enough - right now the level of the books are over their heads. This is a personal choice that all parents have to make but I do hope they first take the time to read the books before making that decision.

Maybe this should be moved to Great Debate?

Dana, that's it exactly! You all know me. you KNOW I am not one to take part in a debate, much less start one! However, in our home, these books and this movie will be

Exactly, Dana. And my daughter, who is almost 5, can also tell you what we believe. She knows God and understands our faith in the best possible way for a 5 year old.

I usually check movies out ahead of time by the following website, and also Kids in Mind and Screenit. If it's anti God, then I wouldn't take Aaron to it, not at his age. He is just forming attitudes about God so I definitely want him to learn the right things.
