Liver function and how to control it

Hi Kim

I had a blood test for a life insurance policy last week and the medical assessor refused the policy. He also rang my insurance broker to get permission to forward the results to my doctor. He also asked her to please ask me to go to the doctors right away.

I don't see the point in going until my doctor gets the results of the tests, but thought I would ask what the results I got second hand mean nothing like throwing you a curve ball

They said my Hb1ac test shows my blood glucose is running at an average of 30 mmol/L (US 540 mg/dL) and that my liver function? results are 10 times what they should be

I was in hospital in January with an enlarged liver and spleen which caused me to go into DKA, however they fixed the problem at the time and sent me home 10 days later. (We had had a plumbing problem at work and tho I used all the proper safety equipment and sterilisers some bug got me anyway - altho nothing nasty in the hepatitis range thank goodness).

I drink a lot of water to keep my kidneys functioning but what on earth do you do to help your liver. I have maybe one alcoholic drink a month but am going to stop that, what else can I do?

This is a toughie, Maree. You would have to work with your Doctor on this one, since I don't know your case history. It is possibly inflammation caused from your Diabetes, which is something that you cannot help. You can work on keeping a tighter control on your diabetes and working with a low-fat diet, which is easier on your liver. This would be something much better discussed with your primary MD.

There are many, many things that can cause elevated liver enzymes. Determining the cause is key in how to appropriately minimize the damage.

Good luck and take care!!

Thanks Kim, I hadn't remembered about the liver and low fat, (I had thought low fat was for your gall bladder ). I got a call from my doctor this morning and I'm going in on tuesday afternoon. Hopefully that will give me a better idea of what to do.

Mostly I need a bloody holiday, I haven't had one in over a year now and the last few months have been very stressful with closing one business and starting another. Every time I think I'm going to get a chance for a holiday something else crops up, this time one of my staff has had to go to India for a month bc his father had a heart attack and needs bypass surgery and his mother needs him, so once again no holiday for Maree instead I get to work extra hours to cover his shifts not his fault, but frustrating neverr the less.

I'm so sorry, Maree! That stinks. I sure hope something can be done to get you a proper break soon.

Yep...lowering fats helps not only the gallbladder, but the liver too.

I am exaggerating slightly, I had 10 days off in January this year, of course I spent them in hospital but hey at least I wasn't at work (unless you count all the phone calls I made to work during the day )>

I really wish they invent a pill we could take for nutrition instead of having to eat, everrything I like the taste of I shouldn't be eating and what I am allowed to eat, on the whole, I don't like no matterr how much I try. I was really disappointed that I was turned down for life cover, now I have the added stress of not being able to quietly slip away in my sleep one day knowing that Des and the boys would be taken care of.

Jeez it is 4:15am no wonder I am falling asleep whilst I'm typing, going to bed now, Seet Dreams for when you go to bed tonight.
