Maternal Triple Screen Results

Hello everyone, I am really hopeful that some of you might have some words of wisdom for me. Today my doctor called to let me know that my blood results from the triple screen came back as positive for being at increased risk for having a baby with Down Syndrome. At this point I feel scared, nervous, and just generally very confused and anxious. I was able to schedule the Level 2 ultrasound for next wednesday, but that seems like forever from now, I dont know how I am going to make it through the next five days! I have done some research and found that false positive results are fairly common, and much of the time things turn out to be just fine. However, I obviously cant make that assumption at this point. Has anyone been through this before? Any advice? Comforting stories? Thank you all in advance!

Liz

I know it's easy for me to say, but don't get too worked up over this. It is VERY common to have this test come back with elevated levels.
I was 36 when I had my son, and I had the triple screen done. My levels came back elevated. Because of my age, I was seeing both my regular ob and a perinatologist. Also because of my age, I really considered having amnio done. About two weeks before I could have the perinatologist do the amnio, I went to see my ob. He talked to me about it, and he told me that he saw these sorts of results all the time, and because my husband and I have no family history, no other contributing factors besides my age, he felt that I had nothing to worry about, that based on the FACTS we were dealing with a 1% or less chance of anything being wrong, even with the triple screen results coming back as they did. When I went to see the perinatologist, he said we were looking at a .4% chance (less than half a percent) of anything being wrong, and based on his years of experience, he just didn't see the point in doing amnio. I had Level 2 u/s every month, and we could see the baby so well, so that was also a help in making the decision not to stress over it. So, that said, I would take a deep breath and just try to keep it all in perspective. If you are not over 35 and have no family history on your side or the baby's father's side, then I don't think you have much to worry about. I know it's scary, and I know you will worry, but really I think it's okay.

Thank you, Tammy. Your words and story were really helpful to me...I know that it is unrealistic for me to seek comfort in other people's experiences, because everyone is different, but it really helps in this case to know that other people have received positive results but had nothing wrong. I am 24 years old, and I already have a happy, healthy 2 year old daughter. We have no family history, and no reason to expect complications. I know that DS can be just a random occurrence, but this just seems so odd to me! Right now I am trying to do just what you said, and take deep breaths and just try not to worry, but it's hard! Thank you again for the kind words!

Lizzie... I personally didn't have this but a very good friend did with her first baby. She was over 30 at the time, and her triple screen came back as possible Downs. She was terrified. I was with her through most of it because her husband was deployed. They actually had someone in the family on one side with downs, which increased her worry. They did do Amnio, and still weren't 100% sure (it was inconclusive)... fast forward to the end of her pregnancy and she had a healthy baby boy. No, down syndrome at all. She was also told that it was common for false posititves. Try to be calm... and it isn't unrealistic to seek comfort from other people. We all do it... That's the main point of this whole community! Let us know.

With my 2 kiddos, I chose NOT to have a triple screen done. With the number of false positives, I didn't want to even put added stress on myself.

Good luck.

Well said, Heather! And she's right, that is what we are here for--support, advice, a shoulder to lean on or cry on, whatever you need, you will find a great group of women here who will support you.
I also wanted to tell you that I had a friend who had the triple screen done with her first pregnancy, and her levels showed an elevated risk. She had amnio done, and everything was fine. Her son was born healthy and is healthy to this day and he's 14!
I did not have the triple screen done with my first pregnancy because I was under 35 and knew the high occurance of "false positives." I just decided it wasn't worth the worry.
It sounds like chances are good that you have a healthy baby boy growing inside you! The level 2 ultrasound should give you more assurance, too. Keep us posted.

Well, here I am home from the level two ultrasound, and I feel just as unsure as I did before we left! We did find out some good stuff: we are having a boy! His heart, brain, kidneys and such looked fine. The only thing they were "obligated to advise us of" was that his arms and legs measured marginally shorter in comparison with the rest of his measurements. This could just mean he wont be super tall, but it could still be caused by a chromosome abnormality. The only way we could be sure is to have amnio, and I dont think I am prepared to do that because of the risk of losing the baby altogether. Soooo now I just have to make peace with the fact that we wont know 100 percent for sure what the situation is until he is born. That's my update! Thank you all for your continued support, its really heartwarming.
