Paper or Plastic?

I'm surfing the net and run across a CNN news video - I hope the link works!

What is your opinion - paper or plastic? Why or why not?

I usually ask for plastic because :

1. The bags have handles (the paper bags at grocery stores don't, making them difficult to carry)

2. Paper bags hold more, which oftentimes makes them too heavy for me to manage

3. I reuse my plastic bags for many different things, like small trash bags, which saves me having to buy the other things I use the bags for

4. Cold, wet food + paper bag = disaster! I'm sure everyone can relate to that one!

5. Plastic bags are easier and cheaper to make than paper, which uses trees. Both can be recycled (and certainly should be whenver possible), but plastic bags can be recycled in many more ways than paper bags. (I'm referring to different uses for them as opposed to paper bags.)

That being said, right before school rolls around I always make at least one shopping trip and ask for paper bags. Cheaper than buying book covers!

I use plastic. They are more convenient and I recycle mine.

plastic - only cause its easier to carry 10 bags in the house at one time.

I'd PREFER paper, for sure. However, I use plastic b/c I can carry 10 bags at once, they are easy to recycle and it's pretty much all my local store has. I guess I need to shop at a bigger store....

I like paper bags if I'm only getting a few items and they are MUCH better for cold items...
However, I usually get plastic. Not only are they more convenient for me because I can carry more and reuse them in my small trash cans, but they are more cost effective for the store. Oh, and because I worked in a grocery store and KNOW how much of a pita it is to bag in paper!

I prefer paper, too, but when my "paper bag storage area" is full, I go with plastic.

The paper bags at our grocery store do have handles, but you have to be careful how much you load into them - the handles have a tendency to tear off if you over-load the bag. And I use plastic bags in my small trash cans (the bathrooms all have trash cans made to use with those handled bags), and I've even used them as packing material (they make surprisingly good/light padding if you use enough of them).

Well of the two options discussed I prefer paper... I have the same problems with plastic Liz does.

But... that being said I normally use cloth bags for my groceries, they have handle's and I just reuse them for each trip.

I have tons of cloth bags. They hold sooooo much. I get plastic when I forget the cloth ones, even though plastic is harder to recycle than paper is. Unfortunately you can only hold a few items in the plastic bags, I guess they are thinner than they used to be.

I use canvas almost exclusively. Occasionally I ask for a couple plastic for cat box stuff.

Liz, I have one of those collapsable box thingys that I put the plastic bags in when I put them in the trunk. This keeps them from spilling. Then I just carry the whole thing into the house, put the food away, break down the box thingy and put it back in the car the next time I leave the house. I have a large one and a medium sized one and they work great!
