Open Floor Plans

How do you decorate one room when you have an open floor plan?

My problem is that I want to paint the "game room". When you walk in the front door, the stairs are immediately on your left, the foyer directly in front of you, which is open to the game room on your right, which is open to the small formal dining room to the right of that. How do I paint and decorate JUST the game room? The main wall of that room shares the wall with the foyer. Do I have to paint that too? And of course the stairs are open to the foyer, so what about that wall?

And how do you decorate a room in an open floor plan? I want it to be fun and relaxing, but since it is next to the small formal dining room (that we never use), how do I do that without making the dining room look strange? (The dingin room has antique cherry wood furniture.)

I've seen it done where coordinating colors were used in both rooms so that the shared wall would carry the color of the main room and the other walls (which would be the dining room or foyer in your case) would match but be different giving the area the appearance of a separate room.
I've also seen it done where molding was used on the walls and ceiling between the two rooms to give a doorway affect and make a boundary for the two paint colors.

We have crown molding in every room downstairs, but I've never seen it used on a wall! I'll have to do some research on that. It could work between the foyer and game room. The wall between ther dining room and the game room already comes in about 2 feet, so you can definitely tell it is a separate room. Thanks, Elaine!

Use coordinating colors. I would also suggest paint an accent wall. You can you rugs to visually seperate the rooms. You can also use like bookshelves or screens to divide the rooms a little bit but still keep it open. Could you post some pictures? It may be easier for people to have ideas if they can see the space.

Good idea, Milly! I'll have to do that some time next week.
