Redecorating - re organizing my sewing/craftin area - thoughts?

So if ya all remember back when I was preggo with KAte I painted the room red. (Getto red as Kev calls it )

Well that was before I go into sewing as much as I am and the red just isn't working. I need something lighter to help bring out the colors in the fabrics and make the room brighter as there is only one window and it only gets sunlight in the morning and I sew more late day/night.

I need tips for painting over it the easiest way and - right now the only thing I know is I want a light neutral color. I *Hope* to start at it after Easter. Paint can't be THAT expensive can it?

Red is the absolute hardest color to paint over. Even harder than black. You will need 2-3 coats of primer. But you can make it a little easier if you get the primer tinted to go with the color you end up deciding on. With tinted primer, you should only need 2 coats max before you put on the actual color. And then you will only need 1 coat of paint (final color).

I am gonna suggest Kihls (I think I spelled that right) primer for the red... My friend Holley had painted her sons room Royal Blue... she tried two other cheaper primers on sections of it (because Kihl's was the most expensive one) and they just weren't covering the blue. Finally went and bought the Kihls and two coats of it covered it (only one coat was needed where she had already tried the cheaper ones).

OK - But just so you know - I'm going to drea putting 2 coats of primer + painting.

Maybe it would be cheaper to hire someone? :lol;

Ih ave a nice yellow for my sewing room which works really well....its not super bright and not too light. I only have one window in my sewing area too, which is pretty big. Works pretty good

Primer's not too bad - you have to try and keep it even, of course, but you don't have to be particularly neat in your brush strokes, especially when doing two coats.

The only other option is wallpaper, which is way harder than two coats of primer + paint.

If the room doesn't get a lot of direct light, you might want to go with a yellow, or even a cream (you can dress it up with a border or stencilling, if you want). What I did in our bedroom at our old house was pick up sample cards of all the colors I liked, then looked at them in the morning, stuck to the wall. Our bedroom in that house got so much morning/afternoon sun that I decided against yellow - there was so much light it just washed out the color. I ended up going with a medium green instead.

Green is a great alternative to yellow and is a very relaxing color to boot. In my study I have a light lavender shade that's really soothing and brightens up the room since it only has one window that doesn't get sun until the evening.

I'm not a fan of yellow but a pale sage or lavendar (also not a fan of but like it better than yellow) could really help lighten things up.

OOH pale sage.....

I think I will drag the girls to Home depot tonight to snag up some color cards.
If it makes a diference the carpet is blue. It will go but not this year. No way I can afford new floring too.

The primer is spelled Kilz. And even with a "good" primer, you are going to have trouble covering red. It's just a hard color to paint over.

You might try going with a neutral color. Then when you want a change, you can just change the accent colors in the room. Beige/Sand is a good one. But just about any light color can work as a neutral (not pastels, tho).
