Really Basic Advice!

Hey, Im Harriet. My partner and I have just started planning to plan to TTC! I know that may sound long but we were both accidental pregnancies who, though very loved, caused lots of emotional and financial problems for our parents due to our unplanned arrivals, so we figured we'd try and do it right and really plan! You may never be totally ready for a baby but you can sure try your best!

I was wondering if anyone would mind informing me about the super basics! I've read around and keep coming across things like ovulation testers and temperature takers and all sorts of things I havnt got a clue about! Im starting to think I may need to take a few degree modules in biology before I attempt this! Its so much better to be able to get advice from 'real' people as opposed to just articles.

Ive been on birth control pills for coming up to 6 years almost solidly and due to this my period is very light and unpredictable. It actually stopped completely for about 9 months just over a year ago. Now I get about a day of not much. Some may think this is great but its actually slightly concerning. Although when I spoke to the nurse about it she said it was fine and I was actually conserving eggs, which is a good thing.

ANYWHO...(god I am good at making a really simple question and essay!)

What I mean is having been on the pill for so long how long would you generally suggest I come off the pill and use condoms for before trying? Whats the deal with all the temperature thingys? Do different positions really make a difference? I know about folic acid but should I take anything else? What about my partner, should he be doing anything? How long should it generally take to conceive if youre doing everything as well as possible and have no fertility problems (Im in my early 20s, with a healthy weight, bmi 20, my only physical health problem is moderate IBS)

Sorry for all the questions, Im really not good at paraphrasing! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Re: Really Basic Advice!

I would think the first step (before temping and such) would be to see if Nature works with you. Stop the pills, use BC for however long the doc ssays to and then just relax.

Oh Im all for relaxing, Im in no rush! Mostly I guess my question is how many cycles do people recommend waiting for after coming off birth control and how long do most people take to concieve?
Im one of those people who likes to know as much as possible about what Im getting into, Im an information junkie!

I do have a habit of making short stories very long though!

Re: Really Basic Advice!

The great thing about the birth control pill is the speed in which it is reversible once you stop taking it! Doctor's at one time recomended waiting 2 - 3 cycles after getting off the pill to start TTC thinking there was higher chance of miscariage if you get pregnant right away... this hasn't been proven to be the case. Women can and do get pregnant as early as 2 weeks after their last pill and have just as good a chance as women who wait in carrying the pregnancy to full term.
As for positions... there are a lot of wives' tales out there but position has absolutely nothing to do with whether you conceive or not.
Best of luck TTC!

Re: Really Basic Advice!

I was just thinking that I know lots of people who got pregnant ON the pill with no problems with their pregnancies. I would say start trying as long as you are off the pill.
When I was trying to have my daughter, I bought this book titled, The Fastest Way to Get Pregnant Naturally. It's written by a medical doctor, and it explains ovulation cycles and how to take your temperature, chart it, etc. I did this for a LONG time, but I can't remember how to do it any more. I found this book to be invaluable. I actually bought it for one of my girlfriends when she was trying to get pregnant, and she was pregnant within six months.

Re: Really Basic Advice!

The doctors tell you 3 months I believe of being off the pill. I got pregnant all 3 times immediately after stopping the pill and my boys are all healthy. I just think it depends on your body. But I would just relax and not worry about any of the temperatures, etc until you have tried to conceive and had no luck!

Re: Really Basic Advice!

i'm with the rest of the ladies. just go off the pill and throw caution in the wind from there. after around six months or a year if no positives, then you can begin charting temperatures and all that stuff. just have fun!

Re: Really Basic Advice!

Have you used anything else other than the pill, as certain BC methods take longer to leave the body.

Re: Really Basic Advice!

I talked to my ob about birth control. She said there's only enough in one pill for twenty-four hours, that's why it's important to take it at the same time everyday.

Re: Really Basic Advice!

First of all, to Baby U, Harriet.

OPKs (ovulation predictor kits) are kept in the same place with the pregnancy tests. They vary in cost from about $8 (this was a few years ago. This may not be the cheapest price now.) to $20+. You'll have to read the instructions inside the kit to get the exact days, but most women ovulate about day 14. You get five testers in a kit. They work just like a pregnancy test. Stick the tester in your urine stream and in a few minutes, it will tell you whether you are ovulating or not. They are pretty simple to use. I got pregnant with my oldest dd using OPKs. Good luck!
