fractured ankle, toes and side of foot black

Hi Kim

I know you sometimes come on when it is 'late' for my time, so I thought I would ask about the weird bruising that has just turned up on my toes.

Background: I fractured the bone where the little toe meets the ankle joint on wednesday at around 12.30pm. I put an elastic bandage on it like you would for a sprained ankle hoping to reduce the swelling. It was xrayed with the bandage in place that afternoon and on thursday morning I went to the ER and the nurse said as I was not in serious pain that an elastic tubular bandage would do the job. I was told to stay off it as much as possible, use both crutches when I needed to go to the bathroom and from my bed to the couch and keep my foot elevated for two days then start using my heel while walking to stop my muscles from starting to weaken.

It is now 12.30am Saterday morning here. I asked Des to check if my foot and toes were swelling as they felt a little 'tight', when I took my slipper off I thought my toes had somehow gotten very dirty but washing it made no difference, four of my toes have gone almost black (except the big toe), Des checked under the bandage and I have a raised blue/black ridge (about 1/4 inch wide) down the side of my foot from the ankle to the toes as well.

I have nueropathy in my feet and I'm starting to wonder if the reason that my ankle doesn't hurt as much as I thought it would is bc I simply can't feel it.

Is it normal for so much swelling and bruising to occur from one little cracked bone? Des is now doing a small, controlled panic about burst blood vessels, leading to diabetic complications and amputations. (Did I mention he panic's a bit about my diabetes, esp when I was in hospital DKA 4 weeks ago)

I am going to go to the dr's tomorrow (I talked Des and Rick out of an ER trip, at 12.30 am on saterday morning with all the accidents, drunks and addicts I'd be there til 6am before I'm seen anyway, I personally feel a good nights sleep would be better for all of us ).

I'd be greatful if you could set my mind at ease, Thanks a lot Kim,

Re: fractured ankle, toes and side of foot black

Hmmm... when I broke my toe last year, it and the surrounding area was blackened by the next morning but didn't have the normal contact pain that you would expect a bruise to have. Hopefully it is normal but I would want a doctor to look at it as well. I would ask him what the risks are with you being diabetic and if there is anything you can do to aid in circulation for the area.

Hey Maree! Sorry I wasn't here sooner.

With you having Diabetes so badly, I would see your main physician. There might be some issues - you have the neuropathy and Diabetes is not kind to your blood vessels, either. Perhaps I am overreacting, but they need to re-look at it. Seriously, If it gets any worse, go to ER. For now, I would probably ice it, keep it elevated, keep the wrap on it, give it some rest and check with your regular MD (RICE theory).

Please let me know how you are doing.... email me or pm me, whatever.

Re: fractured ankle, toes and side of foot black

Thank you Elaine and Kim, I saw a doctor on saterday afternoon (as I can't drive i had to wait for Des to get home from work before I could go) and he said it was just normal bruising and don't worry about it. It looks a lot worse than it is.

Re: fractured ankle, toes and side of foot black

It's a major mission just to go to the bathroom Lift foot to the floor ........gently.........stand up,grab one crutch, then the otherr .........Darn it, knocked it over........again.......lean the crutch I do have back up, sit back down, grab crutch on floor and prop it back up, stand up again, grab crutches (got them both this time manovuere around furniture, hop to the bathroom, prop cutches against wall, then finally sit down. Geez I just about need to start getting ready 15 minutes before I need to go

Just as well I'm not a guy, by the time I get to the bathroom I really need to sit down, I wouldn't even want to try to stand up while doing the deed

Maree, you definitely got that scenario right! I got to the point where I wouldn't even use the crutches to go potty. Just hopped on over there on the good foot! It was alot easier than trying to work with the crutches! HeeHee!
