Katrina Victims being taken to Collections

Okay, this article makes me angry...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080330/...na_collections

How on earth are they going to go to these people that were given grants, and now ask them for money back. I could understand maybe, if the overpayments were small amounts... a couple thousand maybe. But errors in the amounts they are talking about are just incompetency on the part of that agency. How did they miscalculate, in some cases to the point of paying people the maximum $150,000 when they weren't supposed to recieve anything?

I seriously think this company needs to just eat their losses!

I have SO much to say about Road Home! So many people recieved money that are already in their houses or didn't even own a house! THere are some people who still have damage that insurance didn't cover and have not recieved anything!
We were fortunate, our damage was minumal and we didn't have to apply for any help, but so many have applied and have recieved nothing, while others are getting the grants and buying new cars! (I am an Insurance Agent that works with a auto dealership, I see it first hand.)

That kind of thing makes me so mad, but you hear it happening all the time I think someone need to get their head out of their a$$ and stop making excuses and look at ways it won't happen again

Re: Katrina Victims being taken to Collections

This is just infuriating! Heather, my best friend, Denise, ended up moving to back to Houston because she couldn't get any help at all - and she is a single mom of 2. Even though the mold in her house put her in the hospital for 2 weeks. Even though a tree ripped a hole in the roof the size of a car. After over a year of fighting with those people, she finally gave up and moved back here (her brother lives here). She has told me horror stories about some of the things Road Home has done to people. I'm sorry, if these people had done their jobs right, none of this would have happened. You can't honestly expect these people to come up with thousands upon thousands of dollars just becase THEY made mistakes! Alot of these people have already repaired or rebuilt their homes - the money is gone! How can they do this? Haven't they been thru enough already?

Re: Katrina Victims being taken to Collections

The ones who used the money on their homes should not have to give it back, but the ones who spent it on other things SHOULD have to give it back. There are a lot of people not using it for what it was intended for.
Unfortunatly, no one has to show reciepts to proove what they spent the money on. (Not that I am aware of, anyway.)

I can understand if they weren't spending it on rebuilding - after all, that is what the money was intended for.

Hurricane Katrina shone a light on the inadequacies in our system in dealing with natural disaster. I hope a lesson has been learned somewhere, somehow with this mess.

Heather, I agree with that... IF they didn't use it on their homes, then they committed fraud. I'm just picturing people like you, who if you had gotten money would have used it to fix your home up. Then they come say hey, we screwed up you need to give us back $100,000. Where do you get that money from?
Dishonest people, who just blew it on new cars and such... Yes, make them pay it back. I didn't even realize that was going on. I thought you had to show what the money was used for. But this company seems to be complete morons... if they had those types of errors in payouts.
