A Little Nervous

After several talks and many months of "Are we ready for this?" my fiance and I have decided that we want to have a child. Over the past month we've been figuring out how I will be able to stay home for the first year as much as possible (only working 20hrs a week) and things of that nature. I've talked to my parents and my grandmother and they are supportive. Several of my friends know and they are supportive.

We will be using a sperm bank in order to get pregnant. I've been to my gyno once this month for my yearly checkup. All is clear. We talked about me having a baby and based only on my age, she said she would rather have me wait a year or two before having a child.(I'm almost 21) I told her I had already made up my mind and I am wanting to go ahead with this.

I have a history of irregular periods and they suspect I have polycystic ovaries. But, she said that once they get me having regular periods, there should be no problem getting me pregnant. So they sent me home with two prescriptions and some prenatal vitamins to begin taking now.

So I was wondering what kinds of things as far as health and fitness can I be doing to better prepare my body for lies ahead. I do not smoke and alcohol is maybe a once every 3-4 months kind of thing, so giving up alcohol for a while won't be a problem for me. I am 50-60lbs overweight so I'm going to work on losing some weight before I get pregnant as well. I read that being overweight increases your risks for gestational diabetes and high blood pressure.

Re: A Little Nervous

congratulations on deciding to take the next huge step!

the best thing you can do is to get yourself in shape. excess weight can be a huge hinderance on concieving. it took me five years to concieve and i am very overweight.

i should add i never had any diabetes problems however i do have high blood pressure.

Good luck!!

Re: A Little Nervous

It sounds like you are doing all the right steps already. Good luck, and remember, dont' try to focus too hard on gettign pg. Sometimes, the harder you try, the longer it takes to happen

Re: A Little Nervous

I, too, was overweight when we decided to get pregnant - about 80 pounds. With a very low dose of Clomid, I managed to ovulate and have a regular period, and got pregnant within just a few months. I had high blood pressure, before the pregnancy and throughout it, and still do, mostly due to my weight, I'm sure.

If you're planning a pregnancy, the best things to do are take the prenatal vitamins, eat right, and get some exercise (remember, even walking is exercise ) You mentioned working with a sperm bank - are there any additional preparations you need to make for that? You should discuss them with your OB/GYN, too.

Re: A Little Nervous

I have another appointment with my gyno in May and we will discuss using a sperm bank. My blood pressure is always at the normal levels, despite my weight. I'm 195, when I should be around 135-140 (This is not what my doctor told me. This is the weight in which I feel at my best) I'm starting a new "diet" (I hate using that word since I never ever diet) as of tonight. More healthy food, no caffeine. Instead of eating ice cream for dessert, I'm eating fruit and yogurt. More water and no soda. (Except maybe Sprite). So many changes. But I'm more than happy to make them. Not only will they be good for getting pregnant and good for my baby, but they will be good changes for me in the long run.

I'm hoping to get myself a bike for my birthday in May so my fiance and I can go bike riding when we have time together. Its time we can spend together and we can exercise at the same time.

Re: A Little Nervous

Okay... some tips from a fellow PCOS'er who has three beautiful children. I don't know how much you doctor has told you about Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or if they are sure you have this disorder or not. But the advice I'm going to give comes from my own experiences with this disorder...
You need to be careful of your sugar intake. PCOS is believed to be caused by or linked to (they aren't really sure yet) insulin resistance, which means your body doesn't process insulin and sugar properly. If you switch to whole grains versus white (wheat bread, brown rice etc...) and cut back on sugars, even natural ones that should help somewhat. You also need to know that it can be hard to lose weight with PCOS, very hard. There are some great books and websites out there on the disorder. Two of my three children were concieved when I was eating low glycemic and exercising (one we were trying for 4 years, the other was a total surprise). My middle child was concieved with Clomid and Metformin (Clomid to cause me to ovulate, which is normally an issue with PCOS, and Metformin due to the insulin issues of PCOS). Good Luck!

Re: A Little Nervous

I have been prescribed Metformin. I've taken it before but I hate medication and I always try and find a way to not take it but for this, I will stick to what I need to do. While I was taking it regularly, I did start dropping a pound here or there so it does help and that was without changing my diet or being any more active than I was normally, so with a good healthy diet and plenty of activity, I should start losing the weight. (My grandmother didn't help tonight by offering me ice cream.)
