Diaper Bags Questions ~ come on in~

So I am trying to design a small diaper bag for Alyssa's Dance teacher. All the patterns i find create huge things so I am tryign to design my own.

can you take a moment to answer a few q's or me?

~Do you always carry a diaper bag (or did you if your kids are older)
~What did you LOVE about it?
~What did you dislike/Hate about it?
~What do (did) you carry ALL THE TIME in your bag?
~Is there anything you wished you could have found in a bag? (what would you like to see in a bag)

Ok I think that would be good. I am stuck at home so I am trying to design and I wanted to start on it but I need things and have no way to get out so I thought I'd start here with experienced moms for input.

~Thank you~

Pretty much

~What did you LOVE about it?
Could get everything in it for 2 kids

~What did you dislike/Hate about it?
It's huge. I love my "travel" bag, but it needs to be a little bigger.

~What do (did) you carry ALL THE TIME in your bag?
Diapers, wipes, change of clothes, snacks, coloring book/crayons

~Is there anything you wished you could have found in a bag? (what would you like to see in a bag) Maybe a medium sized bag between the "to go" bag and the full sized bag.

Ok... hope it helps!

It does. I want to make a travel size but I don't want to make it too big but as I started thinking about it I figure most people probably carry more than I do (2 diapers & wipes ) so I want to accomidate all of that.

I looked at her registry adn have the dimentions of the "travel" bag that she registered for so I was thinking of trying to match that but wanted some input first.

Re: Diaper Bags Questions ~ come on in~

The bag we primarily used was a freebie we got from Gerber - a black microfiber backpack. It had a drawstring closure with a flap. It was great, especially when DS was older, to have something that I could put on my shoulders that wouldn't slip off when I was holding his hand or something.

The only improvement I would have made on it was instead of a velcro closure on the flap, having a clip-type closure. I've never been a fan of Velcro, actually. But it was big enough for 4-5 diapers, a travel-pack of wipes, a couple of receiving blankets (which I used for changing table covers), and even a bottle or two.

i liked my freebie one from gerber teh best too i think. the best things about it was that it was vinal inside, so leeks were easy to clean up. i think i would have liked to have individual compartments somehow though.

i didn't usually carry a change of clothes, just diapers wipes snacks and bottles. oh and sometimes meds

If there is a separate pull out "bag" for her keys/wallet/phone that would be nice too.

Thanks or all the input!

Keep it coming! I'm mentally trying to design in my head

The freebie bag from the formula companies are the PERFECT size! They are roughly (a teeny bit bigger) the size of a tavel wipe container on the bottom so you could easily stack that and two diapers and still have some room on top for a snack cup of cheerios and a few rattles. Oh and the two elasticized pockets on the outside were the perfect depth for bottles.
That was the one thing that really irritated me on another diaper bag that I had... the pockets were so shallow that the bottles wanted to fall out all the time.
Like Judy, I'm not a fan of Velcro on diaper bags... it always wants to snag things as you put them in and out and end up looking yucky with all the fuzz stuck to it.

Re: Diaper Bags Questions ~ come on in~

Thanks!
I already knixed the velcro from the beginning . I know how much I hated it. I am looking at magnetic closure right now - but I'm gonna hit a few stores once I can drive again and see what other types are possible locally as I'm not sure. My sample bag from the hospital had a magnetic (or maybe it was snap) and it NEVER stayed closed.

So this is what I have so far:
~ about the width of a wipes container slightly bigger
~ Easy to clean inside (have an idea in the works - gonna play tomorrow)
~ Bag for phone/keys/id - gotta think a bit more on this one
~ Elastic sides for bottles
~ Height? Thinking about 12 - 14 inches?

Anyone else got input?

Re: Diaper Bags Questions ~ come on in~

Yup - maybe put the bag for Mom on a cord attached to the bag so it's easier to find.

The thing I love best about Kieran's diaper bag (other than the fact it's black) is that there are outside pockets for my stuff so I don't HAVE to carry my purse. My fave with Caitlyn was a black one that was about the size of a insulated lunch tote. No velcro, it had a magnetic closure. Adustable shoulder stap so I could carry it on my shoulder or across my chest.

~Do you always carry a diaper bag (or did you if your kids are older) yes when mine were little i did
~What did you LOVE about it? Loved that it had a washable bag for dirty clothes(this was one someone made for me and i LOVED IT. Had snap closure pocket in the front that my checkbook mini wallet thing and keys fit in and I didnt have to carry two bags. I also loved that it didnt look babyish I think mine was brown with polka dots mine had a section that would fit 2-3 avent bottles next to each other and if I warmed them they would stay warm for awhile this section had like a piece of fleece sewn in to keep in the heat/cool on the inside

~What did you dislike/Hate about it? nothing
~What do (did) you carry ALL THE TIME in your bag? 3-4 diapers small wipe container destin and 2-3 bottles a change of clothes and my checkbook thing in the front
~Is there anything you wished you could have found in a bag? (what would you like to see in a bag) would have liked it easier to clean like wipe out instead of having to wash it

Re: Diaper Bags Questions ~ come on in~

It's been a few years, so let me think about this....

~Do you always carry a diaper bag (or did you if your kids are older)
Yes, I always carried a bag - just in case

~What did you LOVE about it?
That it had a very long adjustable strap so I could wear over my shoulder or across my chest.

~What did you dislike/Hate about it?
I loved the backpack (single strap) one that I had with Drew. It easily transitioned as he got older. And I liked the fact that there was enough room for my things as well as his.

~What do (did) you carry ALL THE TIME in your bag?
The standards - travel pack of wipes, 5-6 diapers, 1-2 changes of clothes, 2-3 bottles [w/ formula in them] and bottled water to make them [or for me to drink]

~Is there anything you wished you could have found in a bag? (what would you like to see in a bag)
An insulated area for bottles already made up of snack foods would have been nice. I hated having to put an ice pack in there as they got older to keep snacks fresh

Re: Diaper Bags Questions ~ come on in~

I pretty much always carry one. Since Jon still wears pullups, he constantly carries backpack with him still. As far as the diaper bags, ....

OK--with Jonathan, I had two. A big one and a smaller one. Bother were canvas and were Frisher Price. one was blue and one was green. The smallerone we took to the store and restaurants and church. The bigger one we took on longer trips. I always carried a bottle or cup, snack, a couple of diapers, a small pack of wipes, extra paci's, and Tylenol drops. Usually a toy or two, as well. i kept extra clthes in the big one, too. The big one was too big and the small one was too small. They both had lots f inside compartments and outside compartments. i didn't use the inside compartments. but I loved the ones on the outside. The linings on both of them were kind of thin and ripped pretty quickly, but we continued to use them because the outsides were still good.

The one I have now is like a backpack. I like it OK, but it's hard to organize.
