Making your own baby food

Thread Starter
I completely forgot how stinking expensive baby food can be. I can buy a two-pack of baby applesauce (a total of 7 ounces) for $1.19, but I can buy a 32 ounce jar of regular applesauce for 89 cents.

I am really thinking of making my own baby food. Has anybody had experience with this?

Re: Making your own baby food

Because we kept DS on a pretty much vegan diet until he was 2 years old, I had to make a lot of his food, though I could buy things like single veggies and fruits. I got really involved in label-reading, too, so we could buy things like crackers, etc, if I knew they were vegan.

I'd buy unsweetened applesauce in the big jar, or later in the snack-sized containers - it was a lot cheaper, like you said. Bananas could be mashed (add a little bit of lemon juice to keep it from turning brown), and mixed with other things. We used to mix bananas with a little bit of soft tofu to make "banana pudding" with some protein in it. When he was older, we had a small manual grinder, so I could take a few spoons of whatever we were eating and he could have some.

I got the book "Super Baby Food" as a shower gift, I think - it had some great ideas and recipes for baby food in it.

I know Yammie made most (if not all) of my niece's food - I'll have to ask her to post ideas for you.

Somebody told me and it really does work, whatever you cook yourself for dinner you can give your baby (veggies & fruits anyways). Just take out a little before seasoning it, mash it up well and wah-la! Instant baby food. Of course, that only works for when you're eating and not when on the go. For those times, I'd keep around a few jars of food.

Re: Making your own baby food

I made practically everything my children ate as babies, mostly bc we simply couldn't afford to buy the cans of babyfood. I made homemade apple sauce, mashed banana's and made custarrd to go with it, made lots of vege purees and added a little gravy after defrosting it so they had a variety of tastes (we had a lot of cassaroles at the time, we were pretty broke for a very long time).

I would just buy whatever veges were seasonal (they are cheaper and better quality) and spend one day a week, with Des helping with peeling the veges, and just cook the veges enough so I could put them thru the little kitchen whiz I had adding the water they were cooked with so that no vitamins were lost and then freeze them in meal size portions (in our case double sized bc we had twins). The apple sauce and custard I made every couple of days but it doesn't take much and was so much cheaper. And I firmly believe that it is healthier as well.

Good luck with it all. And if the apple sauce has no preservatives, salt or suger added I would definately buy that instead of baby apple sauce.

I used to have a great book called "Baby, Let's Eat!" DOn't remember who it was by (just gave it to Tisha yesterday), but it had wonderful recipes for making ababy and toddler foods.

Re: Making your own baby food

For baby food proper quantities of each substance is demanded. So you should not take chance. Buy the food available from market.
