An interesting statistic

I'm not sure who did this study or where the information comes from but I heard this on the radio this morning...

If BOTH parents of a child attend church regularly, there is a 65% chance that the child will remain faithful in his/her religion.
If only the FATHER attends church regularly, the percentage takes a slight drop to 60%
If only the MOTHER attends church regularly, the percentage drops to only a 15% chance that the child will remain faithful in his/her religion.

The point behind what the man was saying was to show how much of an influence parents are on their children. However, the message I got was how much more of a roll model the father is for his children than the mother.

Re: An interesting statistic

A 15% chance sounds a bit discouraging being a single mother. HOWEVER, 15% is 15% and what are the statistics on how many people devote themselves to God coming from a home where no one attended church???

Re: An interesting statistic

We both take the girls to church every week. The only time I take them by myself is when Kev is off somewhere for the whole weekend.

It was VERY important to Kev that we BOTH go every week with the girls. We have lot of discussions reguarding religion & church BEFORE we got married and it was the one thing he wanted.

You are right... 15% is 15%!! And I believe a mother's input into their child's life is a lot larger than 15%!

I really wish that David and I both attended and it really is hard for me that he doesn't. He is saved... its just a long story. But I hope that my faith in the lord is strong enough to lead my children. So far, they are very into church, praying, and their faith in the lord! Even Kaylee loves to pray!

Re: An interesting statistic

I have a hard time believing the discrepancy between mother and father is so big.

No Liz, they didn't break it down at all. I would bet that in a single parent household the costodial parent has more of an influence that studies done in a two parent househould would show regardless of gender.

Re: An interesting statistic

I figured that the mom's attendance would be more influential then the dad's. Well, but then again, the Bible does say the father is the head of the household. Hmm...

Re: An interesting statistic

DH's parents attended church every weekend and when he moved out on his own he refused to go to church..even up until about 8 months ago. He now attends every chance he gets..he works swing and sometimes has to work on Sunday's and he loves it..he grew up Catholic and how we attend a Christian church. Me on the other hand..we went on and off when we were kids..parents were divorced when I was 3, then when I grew up and went on and off by myself but now attend every weekend with all the kids in tow. Our church does a lot with the kids..they have bible study with 5+ grades on Wed and Hwy111 on Sunday nights..the kids LOVE IT! And Kids Kingdom during church..right now they have changed the room into all black with florscent paints and they just use blacklights..pretty cool..the kids just think it is AWESOME!
We just got done having youth invasion..MAN was it fun!
