Re: Bush is asking for 770 million for countries that have famine

(CBS/AP) President Bush urged Congress Thursday to approve $770 million to help alleviate dramatically escalating food prices that threaten widespread hunger and increasing social unrest around the world.

In a surprise mid-afternoon appearance at the White House, Mr. Bush announced he is asking lawmakers to approve the additional funds for global food aid and development programs. The money - to be directed primarily at needy African nations - is being included in a broader $70 billion Iraq war funding measure for 2009 that the White House sent to Capitol Hill on Thursday.

"In some of the world's poorest nations, rising prices can mean the difference between getting a daily meal and going without food," Mr. Bush said. "The American people are generous people and they're a compassionate people. We believe in the timeless truth `to whom much is given, much is expected."'

The new money comes on top of $200 million Mr. Bush ordered released two weeks ago for emergency food aid. It also is in addition to a pending $350 million request for emergengy food aid funds. Because the new funds are part of a 2009 budget, they wouldn't be available for distribution until the start of the fiscal year on Oct. 1, even if they are approved sooner

Is he trying to make himself look good before he leaves office? IMO, that money would be better spent creating jobs for Americans who are out of work. I could rant on Bush into next week, but I won't. NO money. No jobs. No food. And definitely no money to pay taxes, Bonobo man. I guess in his castle he hasn't noticed how many Americans are loosing their homes and can't afford food.

I like to consider myself a generous person but my children come first and when they are in need all others will just have to wait... It would be nice if the leader of our country felt the same way.

Re: Bush is asking for 770 million for countries that have famine

I'm a Republican and a Bush supporter, but I don't agree with this either. Here, I can't even pay all my utilites without selling something and the government is giving away BILLIONS to other countries. Charity starts at home, Mr. Bush. Maybe we need to remind him of that.

Not to say that I don't think we shouldn't help those in the most desperate of situations, but come on! How about funneling some of that back towards the Americans who need it most? And I'm not talking about the check we will all be getting soon. I'm talking about serious money to help keep people from losing their homes or being able to buy food, or pay their electric bills, etc.

I don't know of anyone who is happy with this.

Re: Bush is asking for 770 million for countries that have famine

I agree with you, Liz. Something given has no value. I wish instead of giving money to Africa (they are always starving. They have been starving ever since I can remember. If we want to help them, give them sex ed and condoms. There is a massive AIDS crisis over there. Besides, most of the OPEC nations are in Africa and the Middle East. These nations are making more money than ever, but their people and fellow Africans are still starving. Time to say ) or a stimulous payment, let's help out or fellow Americans in a real way - by creating jobs. I can think of tons of things that could be done.

For one thing, the Air Force is in dire need of more planes. Why not build them more planes? And not in China, either, but right here in the US of A. I think all military supplies other than maybe tiolet seats, should be manufactured in the US - even uniformes. When I was in the AF, all military uniformes where made in Georgia. They were sturdy and long lasting too. I am still getting wear our of those boots and uniformes ten years later.

Instead of spending money on stupid stuff like more studies on how reading is good for kids or some other thing that is just common sense and everyone already knows, why not spend the money on making these military vehicles more fuel efficent? Some of those big tanks get something like 3 miles per gallon.

There are tons of scientific and historical records that could be put online for the good of humanity. Plus, this would preserve the originials while allowing widespread use of the source materials. I am not talking new scientific information that is critical to our nation, but all that information they gathered about space in the 50s and 60s. Some of this is currently available online. OCR scanning is incredibly easy to learn. Teaching people how to safely handle old documents is not difficult either. It would be so wonderful if all books that are out of copyright were available online for free to everyone. Not to mention court records, deeds, estates, naturalization papers, military records etc. This sort of thing is invaluable to historians and genealogists.

My dh had a really neat idea on starting an American volunteer corps. He sent it to Hiliary, Obama and our US senators. Hillitary wrote him a personal letter as did our senators. Obama sent him a bunch of spam and requests for donations several times a day until dh put the addresses on his spam filter. It was a very detailled idea. So I won't go into it here.

There is just so much we could do to save government money (I don't really need four letters from the VA to remind me of an appointment.) and create jobs. Not welfare. Jobs with skills. A real future. Not just a handout that will help for maybe a month or two, but not really do much in the long run.
