Birds and earthquakes

I'm about convinced that our bird (and I have heard of other birds doing this as well) senses earthquakes. Spike is normally very calm at night time while we are asleep and we never hear a peep out of him. There have been earthquakes sporadically happening since mid-April in the midwest. He has gone crazy in his cage on the mornings that earthquakes have happened. He started flapping his wings like crazy when that earthquake hit in Indiana, when the one hit Illinois a couple weeks ago, and then this morning there was one in Arkansas...I believe it was near the bootheel of MO. It was only a 2.8 but he still sensed it because he was flapping his wings like crazy in his cage. I had to go check on him to make sure he was ok because he must have done it for about a minute or close to it. That was around 3:15am and the earthquake happened around 3:40am.

I read it might have to do something about the earth's energy or something that birds can sense.

Re: Birds and earthquakes

I agree Cheryl, I've had birds all my life and they def can sense weather changes so I'm sure they are sensitive to earth movements as well.

Re: Birds and earthquakes

Well - Me not being a bird person (at all) I don't have anything to back up or disprove you.

But I would agree that animals sence things before they tend to happen.

Re: Birds and earthquakes

It's a proven fact that most animals can sense something happening long before a human can. Birds are especially sensitive to changes in air pressure, which happens with just about any "natural disaster" - hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes. Next time he kicks up a fuss, you'll know something is coming!

Re: Birds and earthquakes

Animals have very keen senses. I can always tell when something's brewing b/c Comet starts acting up and is even more protective of the home.
